Oddball 657

Guys,

Can anyone tell me about a 657 3" barrel? Serial number begins with "ANE".

It doesn't appear to be cut down-- the markings are centered on both sides of the barrel and the muzzle and crown look absolutely perfect. The sight (with insert) also appears unmolested.

I know a couple hundred were made for Lew Horton, but they should carry Performance Center markings or Horton markings, I think.

BBGV only lists 4", 6", and 8-3/8".

I'm a .41mag fan and think this would be great with my others in the safe - if it is something special.

Any knowledgeable help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a 3" RB version mentioned in the Standard Catalog of S & W, shipped in 1986, which fits the ANE prefix; no details mentioned, but it is not a common gun.

There were a few hundred 3" 657s manufactured with the full lug barrel.

Lew Horton is just a large distributor that sometimes placed orders for unusual configurations.
These were both production and Performance Center offering. Revolvers sold through Lew Horton
Distributors do not have special markings

I HAVE A 3" 657 WITH THAT PREFIX. I'VE HAD IT 20 YEARS. IT WAS A LEW HORTON CUSTOM RUN. IT WAS MY WYOMING HUNTING CARRY PISTOL . I ALSO USED IT ON PLAIN CLOTHES ASSIGNMENT IN THE GHETTO. AT QUALIFICATION IT REALLY WOKE UP THE GUYS ON THE LINE. JP

I would go buy that gun NOW! A stainless 3" RB in .41MAG sounds like one Badass gun,The fact that it is a Lew Horton special run is the iceing on the cake.I take it BBGV is the blue book of gun values? If so throw that bad boy away and pick up the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd edtion(You can thank me later)

If it has a full lug barrel, has a matte stainless, and is marked as a 657-4, it is one of 150 made about 1999 from Lew Horton.

If it has the usual "abbreviated" underlug it is probably one of about 5,000 if I remeber correctly.

They are not terribly easy to find....it took me about ten years before I found my first one....my dad has a NIB example and I had an extra that I foolishly sold...but it went to a forum member, so that was good.

I won't be selling mine any time soon...it is awesome.....and yes, it will get attention on the firing line for sure

So it does not have the full lug barrel? That's cool then - I am not a fan of the F.L. barrels. This looks really good.

Nice looking 41mag. It must handle ok because my new M58 w/4" barrel handles awesome much better than i thought it would.
