Ok, I'm talking about "texters". I kinda understand the young girls doin as they do. But grown men at a gun show is just plain foolishness. If you notice, drivin down the interstate, the fool in the fast lane going 10 under and swervin every so often is either on the phone sayin' Yes maam, or textin. But in the aisles of a gun show? Worse, one of them is my youngest son, tryin to tell the entire world what they're missin. In the process, missin most of the show themselves. Just foolishness.

OK, the show itself. Kind of a bland one without much spectacular to talk about. Sure, I spent a bundle, but not nearly as much as I could have. The only gun I bought took a while and it was from one of my neighbors. He had a very nice .32-20 with a serial number up over 141,000. Shows no signs of ever being fired, not even a ring or blemish on the recoil shield. But there is some very minor speckling on the sideplate and around the cylinder latch. The seller, a regular here too, said the original owner, or at least the guy he got it from a while back had the kind of sweat that you've got to wipe off or it causes rust. Maybe a shame to buy a collectors grade gun and then shoot it, but its my current plan. Guess I've got to get some of that wonder stuff that is said to lift rust you can't even see.

And I walked all day looking for a nice old Randall, and didn't see a one I wanted! There were a couple of mini's that looked nice, but I've already got them. I did buy a book. And lunch.

Other guns that were nice, a whole passel of Winchester M21s, many priced over $10,000. And a guy had a Ken Eyster engraved M29, in his classic French Grey. The guy wanted $8,500 for it, but the info card had the old $6,500 price folded under. Its probably worth $4,500. On a good day. And of course Jack Rutter had his postwar 38/44 Outdoorsman in factory Nickel. He keeps telling me to make him an offer. Guess he knows his price is a tad high. I've gotta get more money.

Looks to me like the high prices on K22s are here to stay. Outdoorsman in boxes are priced over $1500. Nice 3rd models are over $600. Guess its time to sell a few, not buy any.

Great gun show report. I liked your observations about texting, too. I have a cell phone but I don't text. I can still talk faster than I can type, last time I checked, so why bother texting? As a business app it's probably a great thing.

Know why kids starting texting? They can be overheard talking by their evesdropping parents and the kid might not notice the folks are within ear shot. Try sneaking up on a kid while he's texting. It might work once ;)

pretty decent show...saw lots more older Smiths than I usually do...bought a set of RB K combats, n magnas, 2 8 3/8 tool kits, and a nice old original ad for the Humpback hammer.

i snapped a pic of the french gray 44 magnum Dick referenced

Well, I could have been one of those damned texters, but I had a good day reguardless. I picked up another Armalite AR-7 and a Springfield P9 to add to the collection.

I think that is the work of Sam Kenimuchi, who did the engraving for Ken Eyster.

this will probably fall on deaf old ears that can learn nothing new,but texting has its place and is popular for a reason.
i agree there is an ettiquette that is often ignored ,texting while driving is dangerous etc.,but for quick and efficient communication ,nothing can beat texting.
there is no small talk, or pointless babbling before getting to the point .how often are you annoyed by a call that comes at a "bad moment"? with a text message you read it when you are ready and reply if and when you want.
how many of you with cell phones had no use for them 10 years ago?
how many of you reading the computer monitor now, had no use for computers 15 years ago?
try it you might like it.
im gonna go mow my lawn now ...with one of them newfangled gas power mowers

"Guess its time to sell a few, not buy any." but Dick if we SOLD 'em what would we do with all that worthless paper !?!

Someday all the collector Smiths will all be gobbled up by the same people who buy fine art and such... we'll haveta' buy auction catalogs just to look at them.

Randall Knives ?... I've got one that's marked "madeinchina" on the blade, I'll bring to L-ville for you this June.:)

I used to be a regular attendee at the OGCA shows way back in prehistoric (and pre-texting) times, over 40 years ago, when they were held in Columbus. They were really great then, and you could easily spend the full day there and still not see everything. Sigh.

We often use texting at work to communicate to and from courtrooms to others in the office, because we don't have to leave or make noise. For more significant communications in that setting we also have iPads and wireless. I have used mine for legal research on the record, for motions, jury instruction arguments, etc. Being able to pull up statutes and case law to support my arguments in seconds is of great value. I also text officers about court schedules for hearings, to tell them they don't have to be there, etc.

You must be under 40 years old, as am I. To be honest I'm the only 24 year old I know who doesn't own a Cell Phone.

I bailed out on technology when Facebook and Google became two of the most profitable companies in the USA.

Sure, texting/smart phones have their uses... but they also have their faults.

Cell/Smart Phone free since 2006.

They may not be texting. My wife's I Phone is internet capable and you can check prices and the like while you are shopping. You can hop on one of the auction sites and see what the model that caught your fancy is currently selling for.

Texting I don't understand. Just place the call and talk to the person.

P.S. Kim's I Phone allows her to dictate a text message and the phone converts the speech to text. Figure that one out.

I don't even think I can text on my $10 tracphone, I sure have not tried. One thing that irks me beyond belief is to see someone being waited on talking on their cellphone. To me that is beyond rude and I have on an occasion or two refused to wait on them. I know our local Post Office has put up signs saying that you will not be waited on if you are talking to someone on a cell phone. I don't care if you are texting or talking on a cell phone, if it is so important you are taking up space and oxygen, get lost and do it somewhere's else.

There is also a Kindle version of the SCSW, which might be useful for looking up information on a firearm you are thinking about buying. Plus as you say, you can look up prices at GB and other sites.

I use texting a lot in noisy environments or places where I don't want other people to know what I'm talking about. One application, again maybe at a gun show, would be to ask someone you know a question about a firearm or accessory you are looking at without the seller knowing what you are doing. You could ask if the price is fair, what sort of things you should be checking for, and so on. All done without anyone standing within ear shot knowing what you are doing.

It's technology, how and when you use it is up to you. 20 years ago most of us didn't even have cell phones. If you were out and someone needed to get a hold of you, the best technology was a pager.

Now, you can go anywhere (almost) and be in touch if you need to. When my mother was ill a couple of years back I was her medical proxy. The hospital had to be able to reach me any time day or night.

On the other hand, there is an "Ignore" button and a Power Off button, for those times when I don't want to be reached. :)

Hello
I have no use for Text messaging , or those that do it and my Phone is not capable of it. Most People that I see Talking on their cell phone's on the Interstate or Text Messaging have no business doing it as they hinder Traffic and other driver's with their swerving. My Daughter was AZZ Ended by a Punk that was text Messaging while she was stopped waiting for the guy ahead of her to turn left. The T. H. P. Estimated her Vehicle was hit at 50 MPH Plus. It totaled her 2007 Chrysler Aspen SUV and he hit her so hard that her driver's seat back broke. The Estimate to fix her Vehicle was $13,000.00 & It hurt her back and she is still having problem's from it Two year's after the accident. The Text Message Idiot never touched his brakes as he hit her at Full Steam and he told me at the accident scene that it was all his fault as he was Indeed Text messaging when he hit our Daughter but when the T. H. P. Officer showed up he Lied through his Teeth, saying his Brakes failed. he was Ticketed for not having his vehicle under control but later on it was discovered that he was Text Messaging as the attorney requested the Cell phone records and it showed the Text at the time of the accident, So the T. H. P. Officer changed his charges to Text Messaging and also added another couple of ticket's for Purgatory information and Vehicular assault. He & His Insurance Company paid dearly for his action's but it did not cure my Daughter's back issues, nor her New Fear of driving. There were Three vehicles involved with my Daughter being the center one. Her vehicle started up and I drove it home badly smashed but the Ford Crown Victoria that was turning left in front of her was totaled and had to be towed as well as the Punk's Ranger Pickup. I Testified for her and told the attorney that he Indeed admitted to text Messaging which is Illegal and Forbiden here in East Tennessee. Once they had that information and the cell phone bill records it was settled Very quickly without court. ;) I was Glad that she had her Big Chrysler Aspen SUV as she had just sold her Jeep Liberty and I feel that her injuries would have been much worse in that Much smaller vehicle. The Ranger hit her so hard that he crushed the heavy wall tubular rear end support and it Popped the spare tire and bent the rim on both sides as shown. In my mind unless you want to loose everything that you have I wouldn't suggest text messaging or talking on a Cell phone while driving. I also do not like it at Gun shows when these Cell Phone Freaks go onto the Internet to see if your gun prices are in Line with the ones Offered on the Internet. I often tell those that do this to go buy the Internet guns and Pay the shipping & Transfer Fees and by all mean's Take a chance on something you can't see or check out.... Here is what text messaging will get you & a Lot of Unexpected Bills after the accident, along with an Insurance cancelation with your driver's License Branded for your stupid Careless Unresponsible Mistakes.
