I'm new to guns and wanted to get a .22 to learn with. I decided to get the M&P22 Compact. Went to Cabela's today as they had it for $350 with $25 off for President's day so that seemed like a good price.

Looked it over at the store and seemed fine to me. Keep in mind this is the first time I've bought a gun so they all look about the same to me.

When I got home I realized I ended up with the full size M&P22 not the compact! So I can't just return it like buying the wrong size shirt at Walmart.

My question is then, is the Compact worth it to go back and buy that one then deal with the hassle and whatever $ loss to sell the full size? I know it gets generally awesome reviews where the full size is not loved as much.

Or since I don't know the difference from one gun to the next should I just keep the full size gun I already have?

In my experience there is nothing wrong with the full sized .22 M&P. Though a low round count (300+/-, due largely to the previous .22 LR shortage) it has been reliable and accurate.

You could do a lot worse for a first handgun than the FS M&P. Unless you need a compact to fit in a tight tackle box, etc. the FS should be good to learn the basics and decide if you want to go to a center fire at some point.

Enjoy and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply! I have a M&P9 Shield on layaway right now so that will be my next gun. I don't plan to use the .22, even if I had the Compact, for carry once I get my permit for that in a couple months. I have some private instruction sessions setup then the course for the permit so I'll just be keeping it in the case. Once I get the Shield and feel comfortable I'll use that for carry.

I have a FS M&P 22. I think it is a great gun that is fun and easy to shoot. I also think that it is a great trainer to practice grip, sight picture. trigger control. After practicing with the full size you will then be better able to judge what size gun to get.
I think you accidently made the right choice.

The compact may have been a little better due to your getting the Shield... but the FS will not hurt.

You may like it enough to decide to get the FS in centerfire sometime.

I have a FS, Compact, and Shield.

The fiance will be carrying the Shield, me the Compact, and I have the FS for the range.

I don't think you got hurt at all. I have had the full sized M&P for almost two years now and it has been a gem. I have never had any problems with this pistols and it is very accurate. The only criteria is that you must keep it very clean and well lubricated and it will function as good as a center fire gun.

If you really want the smaller pistol then see if they will take it back but I would keep it if I were you.

I also have a full size M&P 40 on layaway. lol I'm going to get the Shield first. I appreciate the feedback! I'll just keep the full size. Guess I got a good deal. The full size is $400 there and wasn't on sale. I'll use the money I saved to buy the 2nd mag you don't get with the FS!

Well, I have both the FS M&P .22 and the Shield. I'd like the .22c, but not enough to spend the extra money right now. I've had mine for less then a year and because I got lucky at some grand openings and reopenings around here, I have plenty of .22 ammo (still well over 2000 rounds) and have put well over 2000 rounds through it between me, my kids and my wife. Everybody who has shot the gun has, after the first magazine, turned around with a huge grin on their face, they liked shooting it that much.

I haven't shot the .22c, but I think you'll enjoy the FS, especially being new to guns (which I was....my .22 was the first gun I bought too.)

You will do just fine with the F/S M&P 22. I shoot my F/S 40 once a week and I was going to get a Shield later on. After using the full sized so much the Shield felt way to thin for me to hold on to. So I ended up getting a 9 Compact for myself. On a side note I shoot my wife's Shield about once a month or so. If I am the one who has to clean it more times than not, I may as well get to make it dirty some.

Just to make sure you got the message .... I have the FS 22 and love it. I have never had any problems, feeding, extracting, or firing. Very reliable pistol, very accurate, easy to shoot. I also think it is very well made. Fit and finish is maybe even a little better than the FS M&P 9mm, which I also have. You can never have too many M&Ps.

The Ruger is a good gun, but the safety is backwards. I was trained for years with 1911s, and pushing the safety DOWN left me trying to pull the trigger with the safety on.

I did not buy it simply because it did not fit a 50-year model.

I am a happy .22 compact owner.

:D I almost got the Ruger SR22. But I just like the look and feel of the M&P line so decided to get the M&P22 to train with since I plan to get those other 2 over the next few month!
My dad has an SR22 and it's never given him anything but issues. Failure to feed, failure to eject....think you made the right call. I love my M&P's!

Odd... My SR22 has been pretty good. It doesn't like plain lead bullets though, it leads quickly. Plated/copper washed works fine.

No function issues.
