OK AR-experts, what is the story on 7.62x39...

Pre-1993 Mini 30's had a tapered throat and .308 diameter bore that allowed the use of .308-.311 bullets. Ruger changed the throating and bore diameter to .310-.311 to better accommodate .311 diameter bullets. I have one of the earlier Mini 30's and it works fine with either diameter bullet. It also delivers good accuracy after I installed a slip on muzzle brake/flash hider.

The Ruger approach is exactly what I what I meant about reamer and chamber tuning to get what they deemed acceptable, instead of going with the proper bbl diameters. The steel core ammo that was all over then probably didnt do the Minis bore much good, even with the long throating of the bbl. They just dont compress like a std composition bullet, as Sharp or Whelen determined in the 1930s concerning the Mexican Match AP ammo that was in use. With the medium pressure range that the AK operates in Ruger probably figured it was not going to be a big deal and went with it. Just added to the iffy accuracy reputation that the minis had hung on them. Oh well, they are minute of ambush weapons, just not as ugly as the comblok stuff.

n4zov, what is the brass life in yours? and what is considered good accuracy for you generally. I test the weapon and then myself and if I can shoot as well as the gun will I'm a happy camper, doesnt work that way most of the time. I try not to blame my tools, but sometimes it is mechanical and traceable.

Not to stray too far off topic, I've owned two of the old Mini 30's. Still have one and they can be pretty accurate if you properly retorque the clamp that holds the barrel and gas port to the stock. Well, that and a trigger job.

I can keep my home loaded 150g .308 bullets on a silver dollar all day long at 100 yards.

The guy that sold me the rifle thought it was a POS because it shot Moment Of Barn - not anymore. :) Needless to say, I got it at a good price.

The 7.62x39 is a VERY accurate round in a good rifle.

Use a feeler gage, blue loktite and only snug them. Keep the gap even front to back and even side to side. You'll be amazed.

Some use a torque wrench on the bolts and go that route, but I used a gage, it works just as well - better even.

I found a place (Gun Doc) that does trigger jobs there for @ $60 - a couple years back. Breaks like glass now.

I also got some gas tubes inexpensively there and now my brass kicks @ 6' for easy collection as opposed to infinity as Mini's are famous for.

Just found this - Trigger job video.

Utah Deer with 7.62x39

I used a colt ar-15 in 7.62x39 for 3 years to hunt deer here in Utah. Used 150 grain .308 bullets to work up an load. Three shots at 75 to 125 yards and 3 dead deer. They ran a little ways and fell over. Just about like using a 30-30. Used a C products 10 round mag to be Utah legal. Bought half a dozen C products 30 rounders. No problems or malfunctions. I finally got a DPMS 7.62 because a friend gave me a 5 gal bucket of 7.62 brass. A fun gun to play with. I didn't notice any real accuracy difference between the .308 and the .310 slugs. A fun gun to play with
