I have just bought an old k38 and I need a little help. The serial number is K558xxx which I think is 1964 but the frame seems older. It is a 5 screw frame ,it only has MADE IN USA on the frame no address etc. It only has the serial number in three places frame , crane and bottom of butt ,barrel has no number. It has adjustable sights, 6" barrel and I think reblued. What do I have, an original, a factory rebuild,
a made from bits or something rare ?
All help greatly appreciated.

Hi check out the cylinder also and under the extractor too. if you can't find any serial numbers there then it was also changed out.Its deffinately not all original sounds like someone changed out the barrel and maybe the cylinder also. Maybe it was a Combat Masterpiece 4" at one time and they wanted to change it too a 6" who knows.

The one line address dates to 1947. It should have the SN on the barrel, cylinder and grip butt. Even if the other parts were changed out the 1964 SN on the frames grip butt doesn't go with a single line address and 5 screw. Hard to believe S&W would have used a 17 year old frame to assemble that gun. It would add up without the last 2 X's in the SN.
