I just bought a Model 10 snub nose, #c231691. It has a rounded front sight and a round butt grip. Anyone know the age of the gun?

PLEASE post a picture of your purchase! Snub nose K-frames have my eye at the moment, hope to acquire one someday. Having a "mature" one like you describe makes me want to see it even more!

Here's some eye candy for everyone until k720 can get some pictures posted:

Here is a 1953(Lettered)M&P RB (top in picture) serialled C23166X. Might have been on the same rack with yours k720. It is one of my favorites with close tolerances and minimum barrel/cylinder gap. It does have that duller post war finish though.

Might hit a sore spot now, but there was a time I was buying these things for around $80-$90 and stripping them to make PPC guns out of.

Wish I had kept a few of the really good ones, damnit.

Are these old snubs marked with the serial number or partial on the barrel.
I've been looking for one in the

While in no way an expert on these guns, generally, the serial number is stamped on the flat part of the barrel above the ejector. The serial number is also stamped on the rear of the cylinder in addition to the crane and the frame.I suspect exceptions exist so this is in not an absolute. Hope it helps. T44

Here's mine from somewhere around 1949

I'm told that the number engraved lightly on the bottom of the barrel with an electric pencil is probably a police case file number.

Sounds familiar, I was doing the same thing. But used police M10s were common as fleas on a dog back then. All the heavy barreled guns I put together are long gone, but here is C546XXX that used to have a 4" barrel with a damaged muzzle. I used to have a few 2" barrels around, so I put one on and liked it so much I've kept it for over 30 years.
