6" model 24, 44 special, blued, probably around 1970, described as "98%", no box or extras.

Opinions as to value ?

(No offense, but spare me what the 'books' say if that's all ya got :p )

** Finally got a call back - turns out it was a 24-3 and the price was too rich for my blood - wants vs. needs . . . wants vs. needs . . . .

Well, since the Model 24 went out of production in 1966 I'd say one made in 1970 is pretty rare. Probably worth quite a bit of money.

See if he has a stainless Model 58 to go with it.

Give us some more information. Is it a 3 screw? Have a dash number? Serial number range? Is it 6" or 6 1/2"

Any Model 24 should be 6.5" rather than 6". But model marked M24s are very, very rare as the sales fell to zilch after the 44 Magnum came out in 1956. By 1966 it was dropped from the catalog (not that they had sold many the previous 10 years).

If the seller is saying the gun dates from 1970 something is wrong.

If it isn't a pin barrel, then it is a Model 24-3 which was made in the 1980's. Nice gun, they shoot well, average in my neck of the woods in mint condition around $700. But I find when you mention .44 Special, most folks want to skip it in favor of the Magnum. So prices of what they are worth and what they sell for can really vary.

BKD- I doubt any were made after 1960... or even 1956. Like I said earlier, model marked 24s are very rare. May not actually be any at all that were made. They sold the guns in inventory until finally giving up in 1966 and officially dropping the model.

Same with the 38/44. Very hard to find model marked M20s. I have an HD with a serial suggesting a 1956 manufacture but letters as shipped in 1960. It sat around unsold for 4 years.

Besides. I will bet a dollar the seller is basing that date on the serial and not the actual shipping date. Either it is not a Model 24 or he is reading the serial incorrectly.

Wow, 24's are RARE eh? I have a 24-3 that dates to the 80's. Wonder what that RARE gun is worth?

ladder, you missed Saxon's point. Model 24s (no dash) are the rare ones. The later 24-3s are fairly common, but not necessarily cheep. No pre IL/MIM N-frame is cheep these days. There are a number of 24-3s for sale on the auction web sites currently. Quite a few 624s as well.

No, my comment was just "tongue in cheek". Just funnin'. ;)

This was in a local ad- been calling the number trying to get some details - so far, no response - it's the weekend . . . . .

An old photo of a model marked 24 (MOD-24), S193579, shipped in 1960, that used to reside in my collection along with a model marked 26 (MOD-26) shipped about the same time.

Well, whatever it was it must have already sold 'cause I never did get a call back . . . .

not to hijack here but Is there a difference between the 24-3 and the 24-3 that says Lew Horton. I have been wanting one of these for a few years now but the prices Im seeing are out of my range for one of these.

No. Lew Horton was a distributor. Sometimes they had S&W make runs of somewhat unique guns that they sold as "exclusives." Sometimes they were, sometimes they weren't.

Most of the M-24-3's were 4 and 6-1/2 inch guns that were sold through S&W's normal dealer network. Lew Horton had S&W make the 3 inch, round butt M-24-3's after the longer guns were being made. I understand that some other distributors besides Lew Horton ended up with some of the 3 inch run, too.
