A lightbulb went off in the head as I walked by my automotive detailing shelf/supplies. On a lark a couple months ago I bought some Chemical Guys optical brightener at a discount store. As I've been servicing some of my sewing machine collection lately, I grabbed a paper towel and applied some to the sewing machine paint. Wowza! This stuff really works. Now deviant mind that I have I'm thinking 'what will this do on a blued revolver?' Pulled out a somewhat patina'd model 14 and applied to that too. The difference is amazing. Of course any worn bluing remains, but the shine from the un-worn blued areas is quite remarkable. Not sure the ingredients....probably some sort of nano-particles with a polymer binder, but unlikely to have any chemical potential (acidic, or basic) to harm the steel/bluing. I may look up the MSDS to see what it discloses.

I typically have a few pieces on display on a shelf, rotate them occasionally, and am going to 'enhance' them with this stuff. Should be quite durable as it's designed for outdoor UV exposure.

I don't think I'd use it on a carry piece though. It does make them a bit more slippery. Thought I'd share.

Hazard not otherwise specified: None
Percentage of unknown toxicity: None
SECTION 3: COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
Component CAS No. Amount % By Weight
Water 7732-18-5 ≤ 90
Dimethyl Siloxane,
Trimethylsiloxy-terminated
63148-62-9 ≤ 5 (silicone polymer....inert / non-toxic)

Carnauba 8015-86-9 ≤ 5 (familiar to us all)

1,3-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-5, 5-
dimethylimidazolidine-2,4-
dione
6440-58-0 ≤ 0.002 (a preservative, anti-microbial....prevents going bad in container)

Mono(hydroxymethyl)-5,5-
dimethylimidazolidine-2,4-
dione
27636-82-4 ≤ 0.001 (solvent)

Isopropyl Alcohol 67-63-0 < 0.001 (familiar substance....evaporates away)

Fragrance 8000-34-8 < 0.001 (tiny amounts)

Colorant 72243-90-4 < 0.001 (tiny amounts)

So....highly unlikely bluing will go clear :) But that could be interesting as well.

Had to look hard for that myself. It was in the run-on sentence above. HYBRID V07 OPTICAL SELECT HIGH-GLOSS SPRAY SEALANT & QUICK
DETAIL SPRAY And the label says the above and 'optical brightener'. Probably affects the diffraction / diffusion some way. I have a den that is wood sheet paneling, it was coated with gloss varnish. It seemed dark. I accidentally painted some new/repaired areas with semi-gloss varnish and the diffusion actually brightened up the room.

I expect the 'Optical Brightener' thing is more on the other end of the scale from diffusion. The effect is similar to that ultra shiny finish on a nickel revolver, only it's the bluing.
