Optimal Charge Weight

They are a good read for the theory, and a short read for the methodology.

FYI Dan Newberry is on, as himself, on Sniper's Hide reloading forum. He sometimes comments on interpreting OCW test targets.

I have tried the methodology once, I got a fine result, and will be using it again in the future. As a side note, I like the idea of cycling through each charge weight one at a time rather than firing all of one weight, then the next . . . whether using the rest of his methodology or not.

Has anyone used Dan Newberry's OCW Load Development?

That is the method I use when developing loads for my rifles. To me it just makes sense. With a minimum of shots, you establish the max load for that combination (powder, bullet, seating depth, case volume, rifle chamber, etc.) and define what velocity works best for you.

Prior to using this method I wasn't nearly so structured and my increments were often too large.

I use OCW to great ends; I have explored all kinds of variables and tuned my loads. If you want the smallest groups at any given condition, it may be easier to use another method. If you want a load that shoots well over a range of conditions, OCW gets you there pretty quickly. Much faster than a ladder test.
