Outdoorsman Questions

My (post-war) Outdoorsman (S93429, shipped April 14, 1953, and in top condition (with no "Cokes) sold during the liquidation of my collection during the last three years ending a year or so ago for $1625.

Many thanks to all of you who posted comments and information. Concerning the "coke bottle" stocks, kudos to you sharp-eyed experts who recognized them immediately. I did read about them in Hoosier45's informative N-stock post from 2018, but didn't occur to me they might have been retrofitted to my gun. Also, I did check for chamber reaming, and a 357 mag round does not chamber fully (chamber depth is ~30 mm and rim-to-face gap is ~2-3 mm), so it seems to be unmolested. Value estimates are in the range I expected, but I'm on the fence about keeping or selling. I'm getting up there (84 in November) and my heirs have no interest in firearms, so I'm leaning toward selling.

Uncle Mac, I've been looking for you for years! I'll send you the address of my FFL so that you can ship me that Outdoorsman! :D :D :D

If you're not going to shoot it then your heirs will sell it anyway. If you don't need the money, you should shoot it and have fun with it. Old folks are allowed to have fun with guns, especially in Dallas, Texas. And I should know...... :D

Is it missing the roll mark here, or is it just because I'm looking at it on my phone ?

I had a Jan 47, S14627x, and it was a wonderful shooter. For occasional shooting it is a treat. I 'd have to keep it and shoot it occasionally. Those are the original numbered grips.
Here's one I had.

Thank you Jeff for the photos and information. I asked about the barrel
because one of the two RM barreled Outdoorsman I have has a serial number just five off from yours.
I know of nine examples that have the RM barrels and would love to hear from anyone that has one.

Jerry

Sorry for the very old photo.

Sorry for the very old photo.

Perhaps the few that were made were all close in serial number although most everything somewhat unique that S&W did usually spread SNs across a broad range. The only other one I've found in an earlier thread was 69800 and this is 69805.

In reference to the length difference, I have measured near a dozen and a half sets and the largest difference observed was .042. The majority were between.032 and .038. Would love to have a transition Outdoorsman someday. Very cool guns in this thread.

When I measured the difference between the 2 on my HDs, the difference was .040".

Also, is your shop still closed to new orders? I'm interested in some of your Ropers.

Hugh

Hugh, still open, but semi retired or part time employed ! After wife retirement this past March. In Michigan at the moment after a week in LA, I much prefer Michigan! Happy to have your order but no firm time line for completion due to my new life!
