As an almost 50 yo, with my father’s genetics of no butt and big gut, I find overalls are the most comfortable thing I wear on the weekends, wouldn’t fly in my job. I’ve been wearing a belly band with a J frame, but would like to start carrying a 686, either 4” or 6”. I’ve though about the chest holsters under the flap, give a decent amount of concealment if I need to run into a gas station or something quick, SC is open carry, which I have never done. Any other suggestions since I don’t have to belt loops to support typical holsters?

Hudgehog - check out "Liberty" brand bib overalls.
I started wearing them for work (Oilfield for 43 years) and just carried over for most of my "casual days wear". The pockets are decent sized for pocket carry (My pocket-holster Keltec P3AT carry's easily) and they also have a pocket in the "bib". They're available online and also at Tractor Supply (where I usually buy mine).
Hope this'll help you out.
