OVERUSED WORDS!

"Right?" As in, "I was watching the baseball game the other day, right? And the 1st baseman hit a home run, right? And I dropped my hot dog, right?". Enough already! You're the one telling the story, why are you asking me if it's right? OMG (another one that should be stricken from the books), please stop!

And while we're talking about this stuff, will someone please tell me when the word used to describe the gear box in my car became the definition of some life style choice?

Yep, it's a West Coast thing. My late wife was from SoCal, so I got to hear it a lot.

Here in western ny we do the same and I often wonder what out of towners would think. I believe it's because most of our expressways also have names. So The NY state thruway which is actually I90 is The Thruway. And so on. Niagara Falls Blvd is simply The Blvd. lots of examples but you get the point.

When we got a new bridge tunnel several years ago, since it basically crosses where the battle took place, the local history buffs lobbied for it to be called the Monitor-Merrimac, the locals just call it the M & M. Drives them crazy.

It's even more messed up than that here. Many of the major surface streets here have state route numbers. Most people don't know this, but the State Patrol uses them all the time and issues its traffic advisories using the numbers not the street names. They still haven't tumbled as to why people don't detour around wrecks etc. Clearly, it's because nobody knows where the heck they are talking about.
