+p ammo 9mm

Per the Owners Manual.

Plus-P" (+P) ammunition generates pressures in excess of the pressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressures may affect the wear characteristics or exceed the margin of safe- ty. Use of "Plus-P" ammunition may result in the need for more frequent service.

"Plus-P-Plus" (+P+) ammunition must not be used in Smith & Wesson firearms. This marking on the ammunition designates that it exceeds established industry standards, but the designation does not represent defined pressure limits and therefore such ammunition may vary significantly as to the pressures generated and could be DANGEROUS.

Please read the manual.

Now, that said, many will tell you that they run +P and +P+ without a problem.
I personally do not use +P+ ammo.
Your call.

I don't see the need for +P and certainly not +P+ ammo. If you want something "hotter" you'd be better off with a different gun, like a .40 or a .357 mag. Standard pressure JHP 9mm ammo, like Hornady Critical Defense, should be more than adequate for any self-defense needs. The critical factor is shot placement.

crit defense is ****. crit duty is where its at. crit defense has expansion issues

i personally prefer ranger T series (new age black talon) or the federal HST for my defensive rounds. golden abers work well i heard too. id stay away from crit defense.. but thats just me

the ballistics on them compared to other defensive rounds is garbo. i did a test with about 10 different rounds vs ballistic gel. crit def was one of the worse. right up there on the suck o meter with hydrashok. hst, rangerT and gold dots performed the best.

dont get me wrong it still works. for the most part lol. but there are WAY better rounds on the market. but to each its own

Thanks for the info. So far (and I hope it always stays that way) I've only needed to make holes in paper...but it's good to know what would be more effective in a SD/HD situation.

For your purposes in law enforcement perhaps, but most civilian encounters will not involve the need for barrier penetration that Critical Duty is designed to overcome.

I suspect you know this.

I've seen gel test of the Hornady Critical Duty AND Defense (.380, 9mm .40S&W), done by someone I believe does the most professional job.
Both performed well...particularly with regard to expansion (that plastic insert works!) It is CERTAINLY not ****, and I don't believe there are WAY better rounds.

That said, I carry Critical Duty in my Browning High Power 9mm, and Shield 9mm, BUT Critical Defense in my Glock 23 and S&W Bodyguard 380.

Has anyone made experiences with the new SIG V-Crown JHP ammo yet? Don't want to hi-jack the thread, but this question just popped up in my head. ;) :D I have my SD mags loaded with Hornady Critical Duty (SD9VE primary mag. 19 rnds.), Winchester PDX-1 +P (SD9VE back-up mag. 16 rnds.) and Remington Ultimate Defense (in my .40 cal. Sigs). The latter are going to be replaced sooner or later, the Remington was all what was available when I was shopping for SD ammo.

With +P you will see wear on your firearm faster but will be fine for that firearm as long its not its usual diet. +P+ i dont know what a steady diet of that would do to any firearm honestly and i dont know if any one could say " ya ive put 3000 plus rounds with no problems. The manual does say no +P+. If you decide to give your weapon a steady diet of +P+ please let us know how the firearm handled it. Good luck and be safe.

Is it safe to use +p and +p+ ammo in an sd9ve handgun ?
I have plus loaded my 9mm ammo using IMR 4756 went from 5.2 gr's max to 6.5 gr's with no ill effects. Without being able to check the velocity it sounds just about like factory loads using the ear chronometer

I found some of the Sig ammo at a gun show in April. Didn't even know Sig had got into ammo in Jan. It performs well in my guns (Browning HP & S&W Bodyguard 380). The price was what surprised me: $17 for a box of 20. Cheap by comparison.
Tnoutdoors9 does a gel test worth looking at.
