Is +p safe in these 2. I would only usae as self defense not all the time. Thanks

Thanks, I see that now about the SD9VE. I'll probably avoid it in the 39-2.

The Illinois State Police put a lot of +P and +P+ ammo through their aluminum alloy receiver S&W pistols starting with the Model 39 Model 439's. It is safe to fire +P ammo in a Model 39-2, but higher pressure ammo will accelerate wear. I would recommend changing the recoil spring in the 4 inch barreled S&W pistols every 3500-4000 rounds, 2500-3000 rounds with +P ammo.

Do you really need +P ammo? 20 or more years ago, yes. With modern rounds like Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Winchester Ranger T, the only things +P deliver is more recoil, more wear, slower follow up shots and you trade adequate penetration for even faster bullet expansion.

We didn't use any +P or +P+ in our 39s. The Federal BPLE was the first +P+ round we issued and it was in the 439 a few years after we stopped carrying the 39. After the BPLE we went to the W-W 115 gr JHP+P+. I don't recall if we carried it in our 439 or if we were issued 5904/6904 by the time we went to the W-W round.
I still have my original issued 39-nothing. I'm not shooting any +P or +P+ thru my 39. It's retired and doesn't need the additional wear. I'd feel terrible if I tore it up.

As with most things made by Smith....if you fire some +P out of the 39 it likely wouldnt hurt it and it would handle it just fine....

That said, as others stated, it just wears your gun out faster.

As with anything, moderation....+P is like driving your car at "red line"...most will do it....but eventually its gonna wear out your engine sooner.

Thank you, I amended my post.

I wouldn't put +p loads in any vintage s&w pistol or revolver. They're not being made anymore and if you destroy it, there is no factory warranty and its unlikely you'll just get a new 39 frame. So you have to slog around on the boards and gunshows for a replacement or just rely on a modern production compact like a Hellcat.
