Hello,
I'm a bit mystified on what would be the correct price level for this revolver.
Nothing special really, just not a lot of current items being sold.

S&W 14-5 (full lug) no box or papers. 98%, perfect mechanically.
Paid $800 out the door.
Serial BPD25xx . Called it in and it dates April 1993

Appreciate y'all's help.

I would not torture yourself with self-doubt, especially after the fact. If this was a question before deciding to buy it, that is one thing. In your case, you already paid the 800$, meaning you clearly valued it as such. While I know little about the current prices of that particular revolver, the quality seems excellent and if it seemed worth $800 when you bought it, then it is worth $800 :) In the long run that will seem like nothing, enjoy it, it is a beautiful revolver!

If you had paid a thousand for it, I would think you might have been a little generous.

If you had paid $600 for it, I would think the seller might have been a little uninformed.

In between is in the zone. While there is never a rigid answer to the "what's it worth" question, you didn't get hurt. And if you own several firearms, reflect a moment on the concept of dollar cost averaging.

Handsome revolver. Shoot it in good health and with great satisfaction.

Good point on not fretting about it… I didn't have a lot of time to research before I made my offer… I really don't like to do that but it seemed like a nice Target Master… I had never seen the full lug or the combats before… which made me very hesitant.

Thank you for your answers.

Price Question

I think the price is actually very good for you. Especially if you like it! Most of what I am seeing in Smith & Wesson revolvers for sale seems to be not as good of value as the one you bought!

I'll go against the grain and state that I've never liked the finger groove combat style grips. To me they are ugly in a lumpy way, and they definitely don't fit my hand. That said, I definitely like the rest of the gun! Price-wise, I'd say in today's market it would be hard to do much better.

Here's my take on whether or not you paid too much for a gun...

1. You're fickle and prone to fads and you quick turn them. Generally if you "think" you paid too much, you lose money when you re-sell.

2. You really like the gun and or caliber and have no intention of flipping it anytime soon. Invariably whatever you paid will become a bargain if you hold onto it long enough.

3. The maker has made many price increases, and what you paid is far less than what a new one costs. You win.

4. You held onto it, and the gun was discontinued and it becomes desirable or collectible and you win.

5. The military adopts it... you win because the lemming buyers have to have it and it's scarce in civilian hands.

6. You have the coin and could care less about a 50, 100 or more buckazoid uplift.

I've personally experienced numbers 2,3,4 and 6 :-)

I don't do fads, or give a hoot what the military or LEO's do.

Revolver Prices

$800 is not bad with those stocks. Shoot it. Enjoy it and now it's only going up in value……. I've bought a few guns where I thought I might have paid $100 or so to much. But then I think, Hell I've dropped $100 at a bar and all I got was a headache.

You are so right! If I really like a gun I will pay 10% more than I would like to for it if I have to to obtain it. Because quite often the revolvers I like don't come up every day set up like I want in excellent condition. I like blued revolvers with target grips, target trigger, target hammer, red ramp & white outline rear sight & it's bonus if it has box, tools, etc. And today the guns I thought I paid too much for back in the day are worth a bit more than I paid for them so buying something good even if you pay a bit to get it usually works out. Also like you when I used to drink I would drop $100 at the bar in a night and the next morning nothing to show for it but a headache. So a nice Smith & Wesson is a better deal!
