PC .460 XVR 3.5" Muzzle Brake

I just picked up a Performance Center .460 SVR with the 3.5" barrel. I love everything about the pistol, but need to consider a modification as follows.

I chose the 3.5 because I like the look of the non fluted cylinder, green grip, the hi-visfront sight and the finish on the stainless. The action and trigger on the PC was worlds advanced over the non pc models.

I also wanted the short barrel for ease of carry and fast draw, both for hunting large game in well less than 75 yards distance in heavy timber and shooting unsupported with iron sights. That is the only application I want for a revolver hunting and is 90 percent of the hunting I do. I currently hunt mainly with a lever gun but want to be more mobile and agile with a chest holster.

Unfortunately, for hunting, I now have come to realize that I will need a 4" barrel for hunting in my state. I know that I could have bought the 5" non-pc xvr, but I still think the value for the rifle was better because of the above-listed attributes.

Here is my question:

(1) can I add a muzzle brake to the current barrel effectively reducing recoil and adding the approximately 1/2 inch I will need to meet my barrel length minimum?

(2) is there a 4" barrel that is available that will use the current barrel shroud?

(3) what third-option is out there? I really want to hunt with this gun because it is so sweet.

(1) The factory may be able to add a comp to your gun. Unfortunately special tools are required to disassemble and assemble and S&W does not sell them. They could be fabricated but I am not of any gunsmith offering X-frame service.

They made a 3.5" with a comp- SKU 170268 (picture in the second link)

(3) Get a 6.5" or 7.5" model. Also note state laws vary considerably on minimum length requirements and some states also have maximum barrel length limits.

My preference are 7.5" models but have taken game with every length made.

Thanks for the reply. I stopped by a local gun smith today and he was not really into the idea of trying to customize the gun. He thought that internal threading was necessary, I still think a compensator that uses the barrel nut threads would work, but what do I know.

Anyway, it would probably be a sin to modify this pig. I suppose I will just have to go back and buy the 5"

I configured a 3.5 standard model with a standard PC comp used on the 10.5" and 7.5" 460 S&W.

This what yours would look like sans the grips.

As stated in previous post special tools are required to perform the work. No modifications to any parts are required.

Bonkers - I like the pc finish and action. The 5" is not a pc gun. Plus, I would take a haircut on the pistol.

Ruggyh- are the special tools something that a S&W smith would have on hand?

I would suggest you call S&W and ask them if the would add the comp to your gun- they have all the tools and specifications.

I have yet to met a Smith outside S&W who has taken the time to fabricate the tools- S&W does not sell them nor make the torque specifications available.

The comp cost is around $60 to $70 dollars. Can't imagine they would not charge much to perform the work, may take them some time to get though.
