Peculiar Round Left in 15-22

Has always run perfectly. My primary ammunition is CCI Tactical. Fired 3 rounds last night. As always, I removed magazine and charged weapon while it was rotated on its right side so that I could catch the extracted, chambered round in my hand.

Pulling the CH felt a little different and no round ejected. Shook it a little and round came out. Kind of felt like it came from magazine well but not sure. In semi-dark, I returned round to magazine and it too felt a bit odd. Inside the house I looked at the round and observed the bullet had been partially (nearly completely) removed. Additionally, though not visible in the pic, half of the tip (about a solid 1/8"), from tip toward brass) was "sliced" off. As though it was slammed to the chamber at less than desirable angle.

Unusual for me, I haven't cleaned it for likely 200 rounds or so.

Only thing I can figure is possibly nastiness caused it or perhaps the round wasn't perfectly positioned in the factory magazine resulting in what's shown in the pic. Comments welcome.

Remington Model 552 Speedmaster

Never had this happen in a pistol but have had similar results in my semi-automatic rifle which feeds from a tubular magazine. It happened years ago while shooting with my grandsons. No telling how many rounds were shot that afternoon before the incident.

It was probably the result of powder residue so I wouldn't worry about it unless it keeps on happening!

It is common for the bullet in a 22lr to 'bend' or almost come out of the brass. When that happens, a semi-auto 22lr can create the effect you describe.

I typically have no issue straightening the round, even with some of the lead shaved off, rechambering, and firing the round - never had an issue. If it concerns you, drop it in the brass bucket and be done with it.

I had a 12ga target round out of the box quite a bit like that....
Loading my trap gun during a match was problematic.
Glad I always carry two spare rounds in my vest....

My 15-22 rifle produced exactly that mutilation on a round half way through a 25 round magazine 2 days ago. If any difference existed at all, mine may have even had a slightly more severe bend/break than the one in the photo.

My miscue was very likely caused by filth accumulation. I've never given the barrel more than a swipe or two with a bore snake and a swab with CLR dampened patch. In my defense, I am in the habit of keeping the bolt rails lubed and this is the first non ammo related fire stoppage it has produced.

I was just testing it's tolerance for GSR buildup. Guess I found it. Guess it's time for a thorough dustin' and a cleanin'.

Um, yeah, that's the ticket, I just wanted to share the results of my GSR build-up extended test. Success, it resulted!.

This looks like the result of a "nose high jam" where the bullet catches on the chamber mouth giving the "cut" appearance to the bullet tip and the bolt rides up over the case rim and "bends" the round or the bolt doesn't come back far enough to get behind the rim but does push the rd forward but not into the chamber. Again "nose high" but (can happen) without the bullet tip looking "cut".
I regularly RO matches and run my home clubs' monthly rimfire steel and bowling pin matches and see this type jam regularly. If you stop and look when it happens, before (frantically) cycling the bolt to clear the jam, you see the rd (usually) "nose high", bullet tip caught on the edge of the chamber mouth with the rim (usually) low, under the bolt, bolt (partially open) pushing on the side of the (now bent) rd.
Much more common on 10-22's than 15-22's but it happens.

Thanks. In this particular case, I had finished firing thus experienced nothing til I afterward cleared and made safe the carbine. I feel the same took place re your description. Had I looked at the bolt by viewing the passenger side of the receiver, I'd have likely observed the bolt not being fully forward. Just one of those deals from being dirty, etc? Regarding the 10/22, I'm really surprised I never experienced this with mine considering it went close to 30 years and thousands of rounds before I cleaned it several months ago.

I'd put it down to a freak misfeed, possibly caused by the magazine rather than the gun being dirty, unless the was a large deposit of something on the feed ramp. Snap the bullet off with pliers and chuck the parts in the brass bin.

Did exactly that.

I've had that happen before, each time it did, when I dropped the magazine the rounds were not staggered properly.
That misalignment usually occurs when I pull the loading assist tabs too far down.
I admit that I had to reread the S&W instructions for loading the magazine.

I had never had a magazine with an assist tab and my improper loading caused the bullets to jam and bend when being fed from the magazine.

When I load the mags as S&W instructs I don't have any issues.

I agree with your diagnosis, FWG. I know my magazine was filthy and that may have contributed as well.

Stagger was definitely off when I cleared the jam and found the misfigured round. Dirt was possibly at least partially responsible for the stagger issue. But could all have been just my loading technique. 1st issue with that bullet bending phenomenon over a couple thousand rounds though. I'm careful with the plunger...usually.

Same. I may have messed up distracted by the tv. Magazines remain very clean which I attribute in part (mostly) to that clean running CCI AR Tactical.

Not in this .22 if I can help it. In my 10/22, anything that'll fit. Once in a while (armadillos only / last night for instance), I'll fire the CCI 21gr Copper. Fired 3 of those last night and after the armadillo encounter, swapped magazines and fired 8-10 (at nothing) of the AR Tactical. Everything went smoothly.
