people like newer guns more than they let on

Oh boy does this mean we have the newer s&w classic owners who are in the closet? As Homer Pyle once said, shame, shame, shame. Come clean now. Lmao.
I own them because I like them too. Never put all your eggs in one basket. Having a mix is good. If they stop offering the loc they will become more sought after. I got mine already. Lol
Life is short my hour glass is turned and running for the last time. Don't sweat the little things. I enjoy them all.
The new classic m29-10 is suppose to be the best one yet.

Lots of Smith & Wessons live here. It's an exclusive club though. Only older ones are let in.

The new ones? I don't even wanna know.

I don't mind buying brand new revolvers with the IL. I like the idea that I will be the first to own it and put my history on it. Owned my Model 686 Plus 4" for almost ten years now. No issues and shoots like a dream. I have also a Model 638 Airweight and again no issues and I love shooting it. I may one day own seek out a .38spc Chiefs Special Bodyguard as I like the shrouded hammer look.

The newest one I have are from 04 & 07 both limited production & both have the il. One is a 325sc the other is a 325pd 4". They are both accurate & have nice actions. If they would have been available without the il I would have gone that route but with them no choice. My other is from 99 a 337ti without the il. The others I have are from 83 89 & 94 all pre il pre mim.

Given the choice, I prefer a pre lock gun. IF, I look and look, and can't come up with an example I want, an IL will work. My only 2 are a 625JM, and a 25-15, in 45Colt. They are among my favorites. Bob

I would buy a S&W Revolver with a lock if it was so overloaded with other features that I just had to have it. I have diligently looked since the "lock" first came out and came to the conclusion they have not yet built that gun.

I'll be the first to agree with someone about all the demerits of the lock on a newer SW revolver. However, ultimately if I'm looking at a S&W revolver that has a lock it would not prevent me from buying the gun if I wanted/needed it bad enough.

I can put my 1977 mnfr Model 67-1 next to my 2015 mnfr Model 66-8, and I'm in love with them both. I appreciate them both and understand that each of them come from different eras of gun manufacturing. It isn't better or worse, IMO, just different. I like the looks of the blackened MIM hammer, trigger, and cylinder release against the matte silver of the new Model 66-8, but I appreciate the the look of the "finished to match" hammer, trigger, and cylinder release on my Model 67.

You're making me pick and choose between having dinner with Linda Carter or Emma Watson (one is 20 years older and the other is 20 years younger than me and both are gorgeous). :)

After all the comments and post on this forum and others I'm on I'm starting to think people like the newer guns more than they say. I had my 629 prelock up for trade only for a new classic model and offer cash to boot. Now I did not want to sell because around me new classics take a long time to get.. I figured a prelock and cash for a new classic would be a fast deal. Instead I got offers of other old models or lowball cash or trade offers.
So maybe people like their new lock and mim guns more than they say.

Not this boy! Not the sub par guns there putting today.

It's the new normal, like 13 oz 1lb cans of coffee and half empty boxes of cereal and medium width shoes with plastic soles.

I carry a late 60's model 36 daily....it's a true classic and as flawless as any gun I've ever shot.

Just bought a brand new 686 last week...haven't shot it much yet but it seems just fine. I don't like the lock...don't know if the MIM parts are a problem or not...neither kept me from buying the gun.
I could have searched and searched for an older 686 and hoped to find one that wasn't beat to death....
Decided I just wanted a gun to shoot....if it doesn't measure up to others expectations then I guess I'll live with that.

Carry a Ruger GP100 some too

I like them all!

I am one of the old guys in the 66 to 99 range. I bought a new 6" 29-2 after watching that Clint Eastwood movie. Back then it was rare to see one make it to the counter at a gun store. I also bought a new 19-5 2 1/2" round butt. Both have turned out to be good buys. Since then I have had 2 X frames and a 3" 629-6 PC Carry Comp. None of the newer ones has a trigger as good as the 19 or 29. But I still like them.

After reading all the comments I will say I've never had, held, shot a vintage blued model to compare with. My only experience is with my 629 and it is nice but if I could trade it for a blued model I still would in a heartbeat. I have a 686 that is claimed by my son for his and it is nice. I just can't put stainless above blue no matter what generation

While you can't get the same "1950's" bluing job on a stainless revolver, there are processes for giving a black finish. Brownell's makes a product as does another company (DuPont?). I can't say how durable the finish is, but it looked pretty good on the guns I've seen done. Nor do I know the cost, but if you want a 'blued' gun, you might want to look into it.
