This is why gun safety is ALWAYS serious business. I don't care how "unloaded" you believe a firearm to be or how many times you have condition checked the gun, you NEVER, EVER point ANY firearm at your head!!!

Phoenix man killed in gun-safety demo

Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.18.2009

26-year-old Phoenix man accidentally killed himself early Sunday while explaining gun safety to two Sierra Vista residents.

Samuel Benally Jr. was at an apartment on West Tacoma Street when he said guns should be kept unloaded because people could point them at their heads, said Sierra Vista police Sgt. Brett Mitchell.
Benally then demonstrated by putting his own 9mm Ruger, which he believed to be unloaded, to his head and firing it, Mitchell said.

Benally was flown to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Mitchell said.
An investigation is ongoing, but police do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved, Mitchell said.

I guess his two students learned something of value.

Wow, I've heard of a teacher making his point, but this surpasses expectations.
Fortunately no brain cells appear to have been injured in the accident.

I've never understood why anyone would do that even if they checked the gun twenty times immediately before. What's the point of having it aimed at your head (or any other body part)?

+1 That is exactly what I said to myself after reading this. That would be a hard thing to watch somebody do.

Very sad. Unfortunately it illustrates the adage that:
"No man is completely useless-he can always serve as a bad example."

I'd say.... I wouldn't be able to do that even if I examined it for 15 minutes and it was obviously unloaded.. the thought makes me sick to my stomach.

TEACHING GUN SAFETY!!!
What about not pointing the gun at anything you don't intend to shoot?

This takes the concept of a "teachable moment" to an unnecessary extreme...

When I did my CCW renewal a couple of weeks ago the instructor showed a video clip of a LEO (who looked like a Rastafarian) giving a talk on gun safety to young kids, he was doing something with the pistol, I believe drawing or holstering it, and shot himself in the foot right in front of them!

well it is unfortunate that this man died and even more unfortunate that he did this in front of two people watching, I had to find my little 18 year old brother dead after 3 days in a ditch hit by a car and it still haunts me, and I be they are the same way. people never know how the ripples of their actions affect the world until it happens. gun safety first and always first, acts like these are the ones getting lobbyists to ban guns
