Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. Also a new S&W gun owner.

I picked up an M&P 22LR a month ago. Everything about the gun looked to be in original and functioning condition.

I went to the range on two separate occasions during this period. First occasion, I shot over 300 rounds of CCI standard velocity ammo through this without a problem. I went back home to clean it and saw, what looks to be a screw, protruding outwards of the frame. I thought nothing of it at the time. Second occasion, shot 300 rounds of the same ammo without a problem. Went back home to clean it and found out the the screw is protruding out even more. I guess from all the firing caused this to come out. Its a metal hollow piece with no inner and outer threads. This has raised my attention and now I am concerned.

I need some answers and solution from you all. Questions I'd like to ask:

1) Can someone identify what part this is?
2) What is it's purpose?
3) Is this a safety concern?
4) Is it personally repairable? (I tried brute force to push it down, it wouldn't move. However I didnt apply the greatest force possible as to avoid damaging anything)

Pictures after the second range outing:

No one has answered your question yet, I would try posting this in the S&W Smithing forum or in the lounge so more people can see it. If you don't get an answer soon.

I am no expert and don't have a M&P 22 yet but it looks like a roll pin you would have to use a punch to tap it back into place. But please wait until someone who knows more than I to give you a better answer. Sorry I couldn't help so much.

Roll Pin

It appears to be a roll pin on mine that's used to hold the barrel/breach assy to the frame. I would push it back in until it's centered. If it were to come out again, I would attempt a locktight material or use a solder gun to melt a tab over it. Just my toughts

Why not contact S&W customer service and ask them? You can probably even email them these same pictures. At least, that's what I would do if mine did this. Your pistol has a lifetime warranty and S&W is known for their excellent customer service.

I'm with post #3, just looked at my m&p 22 and that's what it is. Push it back in and just keep an eye on it. Great accurate gun. I just got a m&p core 5" 9mm and love it. I had to put a set of fiber optic sights on the 22 as I couldn't deal with the black rear sight. Enjoy your gun and fix it yourself.

Looks like the roll pin is walking out on you, should be able to put to tap it back into place without much effort. I'd tap it back into place and not lose any sleep over it.

Yep, it's a roll pin.

Seems your M&P 22 isn't the only one that does it. Mine did it at first. I just tapped it back in. After a few times doing so, it stopped coming out, not sure why.

Love the gun..

Clean the area and pin really well and tap it into place, once center you can apply red or blue locktite or try to expand both ends.

Thank you all for the input.

Good to know this is repairable. I wanted to avoid sending this to the manufacturer at my expense as I now know this is a quick fix. I will attempt to push this pin back in place. Hopefully other pins do not pop out. Its indeed a great gun. Just one bad blemish.

Also try getting new roll pins. Yours could be out of spec. You could drive the pin out all the way and expand it on one end "open it up some" This will make it still easy to install.. If you loctite it you want to still drive it all the way out degrease it and degrease the frame chasse well with a Q-tip a few times.. The grip frame of the gun is plastic so the loctite till not work on it.. Place 1 drop on the roll pin and some on a clean Q-tip and Locktite each side of the steel frame chasse just below the plastic install roll pin and leave it alone for 24 hours.. George

I have an M&P 22 where the roll pin under the slide started coming out, also. I gently tapped it back in with a punch. It shouldn't be coming out, but it did. I did not want to send it back to S&W.

what size punch to use for this roll pin? I am looking to buy one now. I thought about using a good old fashioned steel hammer for this job :D I guess I could use more caution with the punch... I would still use a hammer, correct? I never used or seen a punch before.

M.Fusion,
My M&P is in the safe right now. But what I would suggest is that you get a set of "Roll Pin Punches" and regular punches. They "the roll pin ones" have a little dimple on the end to center them for you. You can get them in Home Depot or Lowes, Tractor Supply. If you get a set you will have the right one for the job, They may be broken up in to set's starting like 1/16", 2/32" 1/8" You can use regular punches for the roll pins as there not in tight and will drift easy also you will be drifting them flush with the frame not out of the gun so a larger then needed would work fine too..As for a hammer I use my wife's grandfathers tinny tinny ball peen hammer for most of my gun work . Not because it's the right tool for the job but it's sentimental to me and works well.. I have good luck with it! You may want a brass& plastic hammer made for the delicate work your doing.. Heck you could even drift that pin flush with a small hard wool dowel.. If you get punches get US made ones, Mine are MAYHEW SELECT and a set of 3 was about $10.00 You can go up or down in size or type as you need or just buy a few sets as they will sure come in handy.. My Guess on the size of the punch you should use is 1/8" but that's from memory.. I'm sure someone else will help me out here! George

Had my M&P 9C apart this weekend doing an Apex trigger job and assuming the same roll pins you will need the 1/8" punch.

Local Harbor Freight has inexpensive set of punches and small brass and plastic hammers. Saw them on my last trip there. I had already purchased an inexpensive set on Amazon. The Harbor Freight set was a better price and about the same quality.

i picked up a set of roll pin punches on amazon for this and future needs. i got it today and saw that the 1/8" was a little too big for the pin and went for the 3/32" which was the perfect fit. a couple of punches with the hammer and in it went. it took less than a minute to fix. i didnt apply any loctite for now. i'll see what the behavior of the pin is like after my next range time.

thank you all for the knowledge and suggestions on this matter.
