Picked up an odd Model 60

Found a NIB Model 60-18 with the 5" barrel. Anyone know when they were sold and for how long? Came with the fired case with a test date of JAN 2005. Thinking I remember these were introduced in 2005. #CHY300# might one of the first 10? Will make a very nice "Kit gun".

I had one for a short time about fifteen or more years ago, not long after they came out. Too much barrel length for a J-frame and .357 Magnum recoil was just too much. I doubt these guns sold well.

There was also talk about making those in .32 and .22, but nothing ever came of that. I owned one long enough to have the internal lock self-apply the first time I shot it! It went down the road shortly after that! I don't recall when they are introduced, but 2005 is possible. They only lasted a year or possibly two. I bought mine, the first one I saw, right after they were introduced.

For a "Kit Gun" I far prefer my 4" 631 to the .357 Magnum 60-18. It would be a fun .38, but as a .357 it was absolutely vicious.

I bought it because of the 5" barrel, not the caliber. Since I wanted to consider it as a CCW the locking was totally unacceptable. I wouldn't have trusted it even with .38 Spl.

Haven't had a lock go off yet, including a 357PD Scandium 41 mag and the wife's Model 60 3" with 357 mags. Not saying it won't happen. I am going to change the grips, wife's Model 60 is rather frisky with magnums.

Curious, does anyone have a serial number range and dates of production?

There was a model 63-4 that had a 5 inch barrel as well. Not a long run of them, either. Both the 5 inch versions of the 60 and 63 were made for roughly the same number of years.

We kind of frown on stating a gun mfg in 2005 as an "OLD" gun. I might refer to a Model of 1899 as an "OLD" gun.

They were only produced for between 1-2 years, and I am unaware anyone has tracked serial number prefixes on them. They are common enough that one can usually find one or more for sale online at any given time.
