I'm more of a 1970's and earlier Smith and Wesson guy but I saw this sitting on the shelf at my LGS. A 625-2 Model of 1988 on consignment. I checked it out. It was dirty as hell but I could tell it wasn't shot much and it would clean up.
Not knowing much about this model, I did some research on the forum here. A lot of great info. Thanks. You all talked me into it. Now I had to have it.
I went back and was able to knock the price down to $850. It's hard to find any vintage S&W here in Southern California so I think I did okay.
No box or original grips but that's alright, as I plan to shoot it. Finally brought it home yesterday and cleaned it up.
I'd love to see pics of other 625-2's you all might have. I'm also trying to find an old set of the Pachmayr grips that would have come with this gun. Did they use the SK/GR on this model?
Thanks all.

I have a fairly nice, 8.5 out of a 10, Pachmayr grips for a 625-2. They are not worth anymore to me than any other rubber grips. Honestly, I have never found a difference between the factory ones and the Pachmayrs sold separately. I actually thought some came with Hogues like yours are wearing.

1988 is vintage? I also have 625-2. A great gun in its own right, but my vintage 45acp revolvers are from 1953, 1956 and two from 1918. Missing is the S&W 1917.

I also have a Model of 1989. Most accurate revolver I've ever owned. I did replace the front sight with a high viz sight to make it easier for my 70 year old eyes to pick up.

That is a very nice example of a 625 !

I wish you guys hadn't kept it quiet about these guns for so long, I had no idea how great 45acp could be from a large-frame revolver.

Thanks guys.
Maybe I use the terms "old" and "vintage" loosely. I'm about the same age as the gun. :)
Moralem - The wood combat stocks look very nice compared to the rubber ones!

You did well. Fair price for a great piece.
The -2 is the original, the 5" barrel makes it balance well. I have 3 625s and appreciate them all equally.

625-2
625-3 3"
625-6 MG 45 Colt

Picked up a 625-3 about a month ago. Paid $750 for it. Came with the rubber grips and I changed them out for wood (what I prefer). Will check who made the rubber grips and post, also pictures tomorrow.

Looks like you've picked up a great pistol at a good price. I have a 25-2 model of 1955. It was a bit of a scatter gun when I first got it, so I checked the throat sizes with pin gauges and they were all .455. Now that I'm sizing my lead bullets at .455 instead of .452 it shoots great. Now get out and shoot that thing. Let us know how it goes.

Here's mine with it's little sister:

As promised here are pictures. I took it to the range this morning and shot AutoRim and ACP through it. I dug out the original grips and they are Pachmayr's. Not sure who made the grips that are on it now, a friend gave them to me. He takes all his wooden grips and puts them in a drawer and puts Pachmayr's on his guns.

Just took the wooden grips off and they are marked "AHRENDS GRIPS".

I don't have a an older 625, a Model of 1989.

Have an SDM fiber optic front sight for my gunsmith to install for me.

Other than that, Ranch moon clips work well too. Buy a bunch and you can load up before you go to the range.

BMT Equipped makes the best moon clip tools too.

I'm also trying to find an old set of the Pachmayr grips that would have come with this gun. Did they use the SK/GR on this model?

This is my 625-2 mod of 1988 as it came from the factory. I added the front sight.
Here are the grips that came on the 625 1988 model! Note they have a slot in the bottom which allows a person to read the serial number on the grip bottom with out removing the grips!

This is a -3 I got with the original box, etc. It had the Pachmayr Gripper on it as jcelect shows. I ordered the Hogue round to square conversion grip shown here. Much prefer this grip.

Great shooting revolver. For rubber grips for me the Hogue is hard to beat though I prefer the Pachmayr Compact on round butt K frames.
