Well the Mrs. is interested in doing some shooting this summer. She tried my handguns but none seemed to fit her well. So we checked out a lot of guns at LGS and she said the Shield and M&P FS felt the best in her hand. She got a chance to try out my brother's Shield today and wasn't confortable with the way it shot. We stopped again and she said the fullsize just fit her hand better and she could manipulate the slide easy. For just a range gun the FS seemed to be a better fit to the compact. After some deliberation between whether or not to get the ambi safety or not, we decided against it--hopefully a decision we won't regret.

Now to get some reloads made up for her to try out before her handgun course in another month. Excited to have her join me at the range.

My LGS did not have the one I wanted so I ordered online and it will be in next week. I have an M&P22 and love the ergos so much I decided to sell the XD9 and replace it with an M&P9 FS w/thumb safety. Too bad my wife is not interested in shooting but that means more ammo for me.

Well ultimately I made the decision to go without the thumb safety to avoid any obstacles for gripping and racking the slide.

Smart man! I don't have any m&p's with a thumb safety. You will learn to love that f/s 9mm. Its a beast!! :)

I think you made the right decision because: (1) the thumb safety is not needed for safe handling as the weapon is still safe if dropped without the device and a round in the chamber; and, (2) the model with no thumb safety, magazine safety or internal keylock is the most popular in the event you should ever want to sell the weapon.

Assuming you can find 9mm ammo, you will not regret your decision. I suggest you stay with American made ammo at least at first until you are satisfied of reliability. Foreign ammo often has issues, such as hard primers or other causes for failure to go bang. If you have that happen at first, you will always have that lingering doubt that the cause MIGHT have been your pistol, and many shooters have had many sleepless nights wondering if their pistol will fire when needed under those circumstances. Buy American for both practice and for self-defense ammo.

Yeah, I really think she is going to like the M&P for punching paper and shooting the plate rack I picked up from Action Target last year. I mentioned to her when we were looking she could always get a rimfire, but would prefer she picked out a centerfire, and she agreed given the difficulty of finding 22's.

Ammo isn't an issue as I cast and reload. So she will be able to get plenty of practice. Have a little over 700 of the beauties below cast up, and picked up another brick of CCI primers that were on sale at Cabelas last night too. Where 9mm is now around $0.30/round, and I can reload them for around $0.06/round, rimfire doesn't have as much of a cost benefit. Just have to tailor a load to what her and the gun both like.

We're picking up my wife's 9mm fs in a week and my 40 fs a few days thereafter. I'm really looking forward to quality senior-citizen range time.

Congrats rdtompki! I am excited to be able to share the hobby with my wife. Hoping she will find the FS 9mm enjoyable to shoot. Going to make up some light loads for her to start with.

Congrats on your new M&P. Glad to see your wife enjoys shooting with you. I wish I could get my wife to shoot more.

Well my wife has only gone to the range with me a few times. She has tried most of my handguns, and the grip is her main complaint with my 5906, S&W 1911. She likes my 2206, and my Ruger SP101. However, we were looking for centerfire so the 2206 was out, and the SP101 only holds 5 rounds and doesn't have good sights for target shooting. Would have considered a S&W 67, but couldn't find one I liked in the same range as the M&P.

My wife is very picky about the feel of a pistol. She has a Walther PPQ that she like though
