Pistol Safe Suggestions

Why not just keep your pistol in your pocket. If it won’t fit get one that will. Running to the closet by the front door won’t do you much if the guy breaks in the back door!

The grand kids are getting older and I think it is getting to the time where I can no longer keep a loaded handgun in the drawer. The kids are good but just to be on the safe side, I think it is time to get a pistol safe for the closet by the front door. I've looked at few and have found a few features which I like:

- Must have a key over ride of any other entry method, i.e. electronic.

- NO finger print scanner, as they are not reliable.

- Small enough to fit on closet shelf but hold up to two pistols and mags.

I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions on models which are in use as looking at Amazon, there are over a hundred models when a simple search is done. Thanks.

The FAS1-Magnum has what you are looking for. The optional key works to deadbolt the Simplex lock (FAS1 exclusive) for added security when quick access isn't needed. It can also open the safe just with the key. You can easily disable this feature.

The holster holds the primary gun and you can place another gun in the bottom on each side of the primary gun. Lay mags in the bottom or stand them up under the door's catch if mounted with door opening up.

Can be mounted horizontally or any orientation you like. You drill the mounting holes you need for your application.

I bought an inexpensive pistol safe at Harbor Freight for use in NRA Basic Pistol class "Safe Storage" section. Under $20, key access only. Might not hold two handguns depending on size.

I'm not familiar with the safes mentioned by other posters. We don't have kids or grandkids regularly in the house.

Something to keep in mind is how easy the safe is to open in the dark when you first wake up. If I were using a keyed safe bedside, I would have the key on my key ring and put in the the lock at bedtime. Wouldn't risk leaving the key there because car keys.

If you are putting the safe on a closet shelf, you may have other plans for easy access at night?

I would get something designed for guns. If the safe does not allow easy keyless, access, you might be as well off (quick) using a cable lock and slamming in a magazine or quality trigger lock with a revolver. My nightstand safe is a button code with big buttons for these eyes. Change the batteries when you change the smoke detector batteries, or the clocks.
