please explain 'minute of angle'

Just to make achievement of MOA accuracy seem less challenging than it is (well, than I think it is), consider the SOA or second of angle. That's obviously 1/60 of a MOA, but in real world terms that means the angle subtended by the diameter of a dime at a distance of one mile.

During my my brief experience as a surveyor, I had to use vernier scales on the theodolyte to estimate tenth of a second angles for a large scale mapping project -- equivalent to the diameter of a dime at a distance of 10 miles.

These days I'd be lucky to make out a dime at 10 yards.
