I just purchased a like new model 60 J frame. It has an R serial number and pinned barrel. R98xxx. From my research this would indicate that it was made from 1969 on. The model is 60 and they went to 60-1 in 1972. So if this info is correct it was made between 1969 and perhaps early 1972. I'm just curious if we can narrow it down to the exact year.
I took it to a Smith and he said that either someone did a great job of cleaning or it has never been fired. I would guess it was someones bedside gun. No indication it was ever fired.
So if anyone can help out with a little more knowledge I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

My r213 2 inch 60 is a 79 model according to smith. I called them myself gave them the sn they looked it up. Might be a good way to go, I've done that with all mine that had a few years on them. R and pinned is an older one. Pinned quit I believe in 81-82

R98XXX shipped between 1970 and 1973, probably closer to the end of 1973.

That 60 gets a little nicer as you find out how old huh? Now you know 70-73. Nice find in that shape. Enjoy your good fortune and your gun. Mines in the safe dying to be fired. Can't bring myself to do it. Yet.
