please, just sell the box and papers separately.

I'm not the kind of guy to buy a gun that is too nice to shoot or a car that is too nice to drive and needs to be towed around on a trailer.
I don't care at all if others do that or not.

I also think it's absurd that a minty M&P goes for $4-500. These were $150 guns 10 years ago, but hey , that's life I guess......supply and demand.

And then........there's always Ruger
Run your "absurd" numbers through a few of the many inflation calculators that are available and it'll be clearer why those $150 guns of years ago just can't be found today.

Regarding the Rugers, I agree, great guns. And they probably will remain less expensive as pricing and marketability are determined by the market. It does not appear that the market is going to put Ruger in the S&W/Colt/Winchester class.

what is rare about 28-2's?

Well, if they happen to be in the box, with all the tools and original papers, they are apparently pretty rare. That means they'll carry a higher price. Seems simple to me.

Paraphrasing how I understand the O.P.:

"I want the very best stuff, but I don't want to pay what it is worth. I want someone else to go through big hassles by selling me the gun cheap and then try to recoup the difference by selling an empty box, papers and tools to somebody else, so I can save a chunk of change. People who see it differently than I do are snobby elitists."

Did I get that correct, or am I just grumpy this morning?

Sort of sounds like it to me. :D

The only reason I would buy a collectible gun would be to take it out of the box and shoot it. There are plenty of guns sitting in museums already.
That most definitely makes sense, and you should do it, as I do. But there are some folks on this board who are building their own private museums, of varying sizes, and they get to vote, too, as described above. If someone is willing to pay more for a cherry item than you are, it is only right that he get it, even by treehugger standards, because he clearly wants it more.

No problem.

PLEASE!! Someone get a hammer and a silver stake and drive it through the heart of this thread....

This gun world equivalent of a "class warfare" type exercise has been exhausted, IMO, and the OP's apparent intent predictably has had no definitive conclusion...

"To each his own...." should be the catch phrase here.

I'm so glad I can still determine what's best for my gun ownership and I don't have to submit to someone else manipulating me about how I should spend my gun money, time or energy for their particular benefit...... or would I attempt to manipulate them.

According to the "Inflation Calculator", this PD trade in 67-1 I got in 2003 at a gun show for $250, would be $295 today. And my "gun buddies" in '03 said I overpaid at $250 for a "used S&W". I miss the days when they WERE just "used S&W's" instead of "collectibles"......That same gun at $295 wouldn't last 10 minutes at a gun show today, if that isn't absurd I don't know what is.

I hope Ruger never does reach the level of S&W, Colt or Winchester! It's bad enough prices for the Sixes and older Blackhawks is shooting up......and early production GP100's from the 1980's are "collectible" and "vintage" now........craziness!

I gave up trying to figure it all out...I'll let this thread runs it's course...I'm going to the backyard to shoot some .38's:D

Your comments pretty much sum up my sentiments on the matter.

I am eventually going to shoot anything I buy, therefore if the NIB revolver is commanding a super premium price-I'll pass and let the guy who REALLY needs it buy. On the other hand, if I find NIB for a fair price- it is mine. And I will keep it in pristine, but fired condition.

lagavulin62,

Here's my thoughts (worth absolutely nothing to anyone but me).

You live in what I think is one of the best places in the WORLD to buy older, used, and collectible handguns. Especially Colts and S&Ws.

Texas has so many gunshops and gunshows I'd be permanently broke. Forever. There is probably every kind of handgun imaginable available in Texas, and at good prices, if one has the money and time to travel.

Add that to the online gun auctions and gun sales boards and a Texan who loves handguns has no excuse. All he/she has to administer is patience in my mind.

Practice diligence and patience for yourself and you will find what you want at reasonable prices.

I buy shooters, I want as nice as I can get and have gotten NIB with all the accessories for prices that I considered reasonable. I have also bought those that have no accessories or box and in excellent condition, and then I have bought a few that were "image" challenged but more importantly, mechanically perfect.

There are a ton of these guns out there. Your address says you live in Texas, I envy you.

semper,

oh for sure I am lucky here in texas. I lived for eight years in the semi communist republics of new jersey and massachusetts, but that was before I was interested in handguns. we need to get this economy back in shape or else we may have the whole country moving here.

intent was nothing more than a silly rant. I am more than happy to offer what I feel is fair and believe me I have had both steals and probably paid more than I should have. who cares? if I got the money I will buy. ... but you post a rant and are away for a few days, come back to this. my goodness! trust me I am not the one stressing here.
