Ammo is way too expensive to waste throwing down range through a SMG but I'll do it if it's someone else's ammo - and I have. SMGs are fun but I don't have a pressing desire for one. I adore semi-autos - those I have!

In military, LE, and rental, I've been privileged to shoot:
MP5 std and SD
M11 in 9mm
Tommy
BAR
M60
M16

THe H&K, and the M16 are the only platforms where you can consistently hit something with multi-round burst. Well, maybe the Tommy, also...but at the expense of so much weight. When I shot the BAR, I found great new respect for the GI's in WWII/Korea tasked with being the squad machine-gunner. My gosh, what a beast.

I was issued an MP5-A3 for years. It is the most fun gun I've ever fired...if the government was paying for the ammo. Having said that, I'll take an M1 Thompson.
