Poor 357 magnum

What's with the hole on the left side on the frame?

My guess is that it got left behind in one of the hurricane/flood/storm situations in recent years.
No one that owned a firearm like hat would have allowed it to get to that condition.
IMO it might clean up well enough to shoot but I would take every nut, bolt, spring, and screw apart and clean and inspect it .
Just what I was thinking. After homeowners were allowed back in New Orleans, after hurricane Katrina, a lot of firearms were brought into gunshops looking like that... Looks like that one got lost in the debris and just surfaced.

There is/was an S & W (Performance Center?) revolver that has this barrel style, but I can't recall which one.

Alan, are you thinking of the 686 PC Light Hunter? It had a similar barrel.

If this was a custom barrel made from a blank, they put a lot of work into it. Usually such barrels on PPC customs don't lock up in front with the ejector rod, they have a ball detent installed in the crane. And they usually have a simple shape. This looks like a Weaver rail milled into the barrel.

OP, can you tell us about the front lockup?

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. For a long time I thought it was also.

For a number of years now they've been machined into the frame. It's easy to tell the difference because the machined ones are elongated looking, running down from the cylinder window toward the trigger. The ones that are pressed in are round.

I'm too lazy to look up when they made the change but it was actually a pretty good while ago.

Edit to say--looking forward to seeing the project, Panerai.

Would anybody care to comment on the "no serial number-big problem" remarks? I think there is a legal problem with owning a firearm which has had the serial number removed. If There is, I wouldn't want to put any work/money in it and get caught with it. OP- is there a serial number on the bottom of the butt?

Wow!!! You've just been awarded a lifetime membership in the Ugly Gun Club with all benefits forever. We're voting tomorrow, and there's a good chance you'll be elected president (for life) of the club too.

Great project.
Thanks for keeping us informed of your progress.

Any response to serial number on the bottom of the frame under the grip or model number on the yoke?

This is the 3rd or 4th time this reasonable question has been asked. I would be reluctant to offer further info until I at least knew there was a serial #. I think others would go along with me on this...

Hi

As i said in my previous post there is no number anywhere !!!!!!

Bottom of the frame, under the grip or model number on the yoke don't exist. The frame under the grip was so corroded it may have been there but not any more.

Restoration now finished phase 2 and the final Phase three ongoing.
All internals cleaned and reassembled and working correctly, a few small parts remade and installed.

How is it that the logo and barrel writing is quite easy to read yet all the Serial and model numbers are gone?
