hello all,
I have a pre model 10, 5 screw ser#546xxx,there is no letter before the ser #, 4"barrel with 38 s&w special.

it has a made in usa on the right and a small s&w logo on the left below the thumbpiece, and has the strain screw on the front strap.

my problem is when I fire it, the cylinder locks up and you have to open the cylinder and close it again to fire. I think the thumbpiece moves forward from recoil. my belief only.

I want to order parts and replace springs or thumpiece parts but I want to know what frame model, and revision this might be and year of manufacture if possible. also if I get parts or springs, will model 10 parts fit?

thanks joe

Joe, what you have is a 38 Military and Police model from the mid to late 1920's. The term pre-mod 10 is used for post war revolvers from 1946 until they model marked the gun in 1957. It's a K frame. The grips are from a much earlier time ( 1910- 1920 ) Experts will be by shortly to help you with the mechanical problems.

OK Joe, now for a suggestion on a fix. Where I would start. Make sure the rod under the barrel is screws in to the cylinder. Now you got that open, check the spring tension on that little plunger in the housing under the barrel. Now check the thumb piece back on the left side. Could be a gunked or kinked spring. Im never in a hurry to spend money on parts. You have a learning gun. The side plate screws appear to have been removed. Thats later. Lets get you up and shooting. Best
