I want to swap my original post war K22
hammer for a target hammer. Ive fitted and replaced the trigger with a .312 smooth trigger that feels much better when shooting. The replacement
hammer is the same thickness by dial caliper measurement as the original one in the gun.
I changed out the hammers , swapping all the parts..
It functions properly except the Target Hammer doesn't hit the firing pin properly to ignight the 22 shells. You can feel an improper fitting as the hammer settles the frame right before it hits the FP.
In my included picture, I believe either or both of the 2 points I marked on the top target hammer need
to be trimmed back to allow the hammer to ignight/smack the Frame FP Correctly
My question is for experienced members who've done this K22 hammer swap their advice on which
hammer points indicated ( 1&2) need to be filed back for proper ignition if that makes sense..
If you've had experience on this work please advise me about it.
Picture of Smith and hammer shown below.
Thanks very much for your advice and input.
Best Randy..

I'll try that and report back..

Hammer Swap

I'll first say, while problems can vary, amorer951
hit the nail on it's head advising to ck it w/o
the hammer safety bar in place. The "hitch" interfering catch went away w/o the bar installed.
Many Many Thanks my long-distance experienced
advisor !! I have it apart , still , and ask.. I'm guessing the next move is to Slightly thin the top hammer
bar " L " carefully , until the bar drops down w/o interfering while still maintaining the safety feature?
Am I correct on my assumption here?
Once this problem seems resolved , my next move will be either a trip to my gunsmith friend with a bullet trap, or a range trip for positive affirmation the problem is fixed. Then to reassemble the DA Sear parts, check that operation, then place the original
hammer in the box to stay with the K22 Smith..

Randy,

The hammer block "flag" at the top can be slightly modified to accommodate the new hammer, and still work as designed.

Usually, this can be accomplished by removing a bit of material from the top of the flag, (shortening) and then crowning the edges at the top with a slight bevel. Be sure to keep the top 'flat", and at 90° to the stem. During your examination, make sure the hammer block is not damaged or bent.....which can also cause problems.

Make some minor changes and then try the hammer block in the action. (slow trial and error)

Carter
