I have a pre-17 target .22. Sn: K203639, six inch barrel. The adjustible rear sight has been removed to facilitate a scope. I have removed the scope and would like to find the correct rear sight. Would a Model 17 sight work? If not, which one and where to find it? I think there is a round and square front on the sights, but which one?

You need the most common type of S & W Target rear sight, with the square front edge of the leaf and the hole for the mounting screw above the barrel/cylinder gap. A similar sight with the hole moved came next, followed by the current version with the rounded front end of the leaf.

When you see one for sale they may list them by distance from the rear sight to the screw hole; I think the newer version has a shorter measurement but check this on your gun to be sure.

Make sure you get the correct blade height! I only have a M18 (4" bbl) so I can't measure it for you. I'm sure someone here has a M17 and can measure the height of the blade for you.

The tiny, tiny hole for the mounting screw is located above the barrel/cylinder gap, so good to go there. How am I going to know the correct height of the sight blade without having one? Right now, if I find the correct assembly I will be happy, then the blade height next. Thank you, guys.

From a old Forum post that I can't seem to copy and paste, the "slide" (rear sight blade) comes in 0.106, 0.126 and 0.146" heights, and the middle one seems to be correct for a K-22. But I would wait for a definitive reply here before purchase.

Here is a chart that provides some guidance for rear sight blade heights.

I think you are wrong in thinking the 17-4 sight will fit your older K22. The reference I have says they changed the location of that little front screw with the 17-3. With the price of sights these days, you don't want to be buying the wrong sight.

The front screw hole was relocated with the 17-3 revision.
Any post war K frame target site from a 17-2 or older will fit.

On a side note the rear site cutout behind the blade was widened with the dash 2 revision so it will be wider than the ones made prior.

Now THAT is something I did not know. And NOW I get to spend the rest of the day looking at sights instead of paying bills and such.

Thank you!

Seriously... THANK YOU!

Well, that was a fun little diversion. I got out 4 K22's, 2 6" 5 screws, 1 6" 17-4 and 1 4" 18-4 and they all had the same-ish height rear sight blade (all on the tall side), the expected differences in the bases as to front screw hole location and the difference in the groove under the notch mentioned above. Igiveup, I will private message you about the sight I have available. It is a beauty.
