Dating by serial number is pretty much educated guesswork when it comes to S&W. Since the company had no policy that forced them to ship in serial number order, it was possible for guns to languish in inventory for months after leaving the factory floor. While the odds are good that your Pre-18 is a 1955 gun, it might also have shipped in 1956. It would take a factory letter ($50) to nail it down exactly.
