Pre 27 N frame, please tell me what it's worth.

Welcome to the FORUM! Hope you continue to post. Fantastic gun and I agree with others that you should keep it in the family if at all possible.

rugerfan,

What is the status of this gun? Are you going to get it or will it be for sale soon? I just don't want this one to slip thru the cracks.

Please give us and update. I am very interested.

Thanks,

Todd

Sorry I haven't answered any posts yet. I have been away since Friday afternoon. I found a little history on the gun. The grips that are on it right now are a polymer target grip. It originally came with wood ones. As of right now, what's in the pictures is what's included. He might be able to find the box and original grips, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I have sent a pm to you MACHTECH, please check it.

Probably will never happen since about 85% of the guns in my safe are Rugers. There's a soft spot in my heart for them.

I don't have a way to justify paying that much for a handgun, or any gun for that matter. I want to own something that I can shoot and not worry about scuffing it up or damaging it. Also, I would never be able to appreciate it's full value. I rather have a collector or someone who knew lots about the gun to own it.

As far as other guns for sale, I am sure you will see some more nice ones come through. None nearly as rare as this one, but nice nonetheless. He has quite a few of the Colt "snake guns" that will be going shortly. There is also a Taurus "raging hornet" that will be coming soon.

Well since it's the grandpas, he's going to sell it. He needs the modey for medical expenses. I would love for him to keep it so I could inherit it one day, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

If he sells it, you will both regret it. Buy it from him.

I'm usually not too thrilled with engraved handguns, too gaudy for me but, that is one Beautiful handgun!!!!!!

Rugerfan,

When my father passed it came to me to organize my mothers care. To do so I sold most of my fathers rifles, we sold the best. Of what was left I bought two and my brother one. My mothers care came first. My brother and I have never missed those guns. We do what we have to do.

Have you thought about having the gun lettered through S&W? Or did your Grandpa already have it done. The $30 you'll spend to have it lettered might show some provenance.

OK, here's an update. I forgot my old username, and couldn't run a search without beigh logged in, so I'm back with a different name. Anyway, I sent in for a factory letter back in May, and finally got one back at the beginning of this week, and it said....

It originally left the factory in 1955 to a Chicago gun store factory engraved with a 8 3/8 inch barrel and wood grips. It was returned to the factory for a barrel switch to a 3 1/2 incher, cylinder was nickel plated, and the engraving was done by a Mr. Harry Jarvis.

That's the gist of the letter that I have waited so long for. So what do you think??

Since the ".357" is not original as shipped from the factory, it does not have the collector appeal a gun like it would normally have. Based on the what you have said, I would value the gun at around $1500 (ballpark). A collector of guns engraved by Harry Jarvis may pay a little more.

What an interesting piece! Do I have this correct?

It was shipped as an all blue factory engraved (by Harry Jarvis) gun. Then, it was returned to the factory to replaced the engraved 8 3/8" blue barrel with an engraved 3 1/2" nickel barrel and to nickel the existing blue engraved cylinder. Wow, someone had some money to burn!

Was it shipped to H. H. Harris? Does the letter give any specifics about the grips?

OK, here's what the letter says word for word:

We have researched your Smith & Wesson .357 magnum Pre-Model 27, Special Engraved Edition, caliber .357 Magnum, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number______, was shipped from our factory on March 7, 1955, and delivered to H. H. Harris Co., Chicago, IL. The records indicate that this firearm was shipped with a 8 3/8 inch barrel, blue finish, Class B engraved and smooth rosewood target grips. This revolver was engraved by Mr. Harry Jarvis Smith & Wessons master engraver. It appears as if this revolver was returned to the factory and the barrel changed to 3.5 inch and the finish for the barrel and cylinder were nickel plated.
