The seller knew the guy he got it from and said he worked as Conservation Officer with the State of Wisconsin.
This gun is not refinished. The barrel stamps have not been altered.

Simple, join the SWCA (quite a bargain, given all the benefits) and post a question to "Ask Roy Jinks" on the member's section.
Joining the SWCA and this forum are worth the money.
Besides being able to ask they guy who ran the production floor at S&W questions, you can ask for a ship date on any of your guns. If there is something interesting about yours or where it went to a "very interesting gun" hint will be included.

The Conservation Officer worked for Federal, State or a Local entity? Grandchildren usually have no ideal who grandpa worked off. I have seen this with people selling firearms they inherited and they have no ideal what the backstory is.

Im confused. I went to SWCA page and selected becoming a member, so i thought i was becoming s member of the SWCA.
As i go back now again, all i keep getting is the same thing no matter what i select or push to open.
Every time i try to join SWCA it keeps going to the Smith&Wesson forum to join.
I cant figure it out.

1. Go to SWCA Public Area (click on it)
2. Click on sticky: Information about the SWCA
3. Brings up a thread by handejector. Click on SWCA Application
4. You are redirected to SWCA. Click on I understand the risk. Proceed anyway.
5. Click on Membership Application (pdf)
6. Fill out the application and print it. Mail the application and your check to the address listed. There is also an option to pay with PayPal. You can email your application if you don't want to mail it.

Everytime i select SWCA Application in Hand Ejectors thread, i am redirected to the S&W Forum.
Done it 15 times. Thats why i thought i was joining SWCA. It doesnt work for me the way it should.

Well, I have made a few attempts to get information about the gun through other members who reached out to Roy for me. Sadly, they have gotten no response.
I guess the final summation of this gun is that it is at the "very least " a scarce incorrectly barrel marked Highway Patrolman (pre-28) since the barrel is original.
There cant be many like it, which makes it collectable in its own right.

Now that your are a member, did you ask about it in the ship date and "ask Roy" sections? If it were something special other than a stamping error, you would probably get a clue from the answer...
2 "pre" 28s close to yours shipped in Jan 55 and Mar 56 although the higher serial shipped 14 months before the lower.
I'm pretty sure S&W employees knew we would be asking these questions all these years later and decided to mess with us!

I researched the serial number and found that Inspector Gruber sent the HP back to S&W in October 1956 to have a new barrel fitted. The invoice for this work is dated October 26, 1956. Apparently, S&W used a barrel roll marked for a .357 Magnum as the replacement, but with all the other features correct for a HP.
