I need information on a Pre Model 29 4 inch. The serial number is in the 168000 range which is past the range for 5 screw guns according to the standard catalog. The serial number appears on the butt, the ejector rod cutout, cylinder face and under star. The number 81682 appears in the yoke cutout and on the yoke. The letter R also is on the yoke cutout. The standard catalog says the serial number should also be in the yoke cutout. Is this always the case? Is the 81862 an assembly number?

Five-screw 44 Magnums have serial numbers as high as the S169000 range and re-appeared briefly in mid-1957 in the S171000 to S175000 range. Five-screw revolvers (except those in the S171000 to S175000 range that are stamped like four-screw revolvers) do not have the serial number stamped in the yoke cut and only have the assembly number stamped there (in the case of the gun you are describing, 81682) and on the yoke itself (opposite the yoke cut).

Thanks for info.I suspected the numbers were assembly numbers. What through me off was on page 162 of the SCSW 3rd addition its says serial numbers were also stamped in yoke cut.

The serial number is stamped in the yoke cut on Pre-Model 29s with a four-screw frame (and later models). The assembly number on these guns is stamped on the left side of the grip frame.
