Pre model 27 or what?

Found this gun at a local gun show. The vendor was not very familiar with SW but said he thought it was a Pre Model 27. Was he right????

It has a 5" barrel and SER S122655.

The nickel finish looks a lot better than the pictures represent.

Any help or thoughts

Looks a lot like a pre 27 to me. Congratulations. They say that the 5" barrel is outstanding. I think it may have been refinished at some point as the hammer and trigger appear to be nickel.

The revolver is a pre-model 27 that has had a change of finish from bright blue to nickel. The nickel finish was done by someone other than S&W since the front sight and ramp, rear sight and leaf, hammer and trigger were also finished in nickel. The target stocks date to the 70s.

I agree with Bill on all points. The serial number points to 1954-55, so it is a .357 Magnum (referred to by many as a "pre-27").

I thought I got a great price at $700. I have paid well over $1900 for my other Pre 27's but I guess if it is too good to be true, it is.

I think it is still a good gun at a good price.

I'm not sure that is Nickel plating, it looks a lot like Chrome to me. Which would lead me to suspect it was a Law Enforcement firearm at some point in it's past because in areas where there is a lot of humidity chrome plating was common to reduce the amount or rate of rust issues.

Scooter you are correct, it is stainless. I will be sending away for a letter to see if we have any good surprises about where this started or may have been.

That's a decent price and I would not be bothered by that price if you get a gun you enjoy and that works properly.

I think that one got a facelift at Bubba's Bumper & Cycle Works.
I must say they did an unusually good buff job.

Nickel or chrome..........looks good for the price. You could get it re-blued!

Shoot it until the finish melts off. Not a bad price, but not worth a letter.
