Any idea what's going on here? It's a EDC that sits on my night desk (not holstered) and when holstered it's inside a white hat holster. Thing never sees moisture. I use Fireclean to clean the gun. For the surfaces, I apply fireclean, let it get absorbed for 24 hours then wipe off excess...

any ideas what's going on here? Never seen this happen so fast on a melonite treated slide.

BTW, it's a M&Pc 9mm... been my EDC for the past 5 years. Been taken care of very well and never had ANYTHING like this happen before to this pistol

What type hoister go you carry? Have you been in bad weather? Is sweat or left near a damp area. How often to you clean your weapon? There are too many variables to even try to speculate.

Just be glad you find now. A really good cleaning and what I would do is rub it down from a cloth with 3n1 oil.

ok let's see

I use a IWB White hat holster. Same holster for few years.

I use fireclean. I have used eezox... Prefer application of fireclean more. I still have the can

I don't remember any damp times where the gun would have been exposed. no more than a drizzle on my shirt

I could have sweated a bit, but I'm sure the gun has seen many many types and durations of abuse in the 5 years I've owned it. I've been using fireclean for 2-3 years now

weapon is cleaned everytime it's shot, so about every 3 months. Last time I cleaned it was about a month ago.

I'm thinking I send it to SW and have them look at it... the finish on this gun should be able to take on something that I would have thrown at it. it's not like I'm doing maritime operations here.

The surface might not have been prepared well before it was coated...especially for that much scattered rust to appear. And it's your EDC so it's not like you've stored in a humid safe...

Did you sneeze on it?
Just kidding but wow, I'd put up with the smell and use ballistol.
I know an old man who uses 3 in 1 only and has better protection than that.

It looks to me like a good candidate for a CeraKote refinish. That stuff is better than bluing anytime for a 'using' handgun. ..............

I wipe my guns down witha silicon cloth after usage and never had rust.

And I'm one of those rare individuals that sweat rust.

After five years as an EDC it's safe to assume that it's not a manufacturer flaw.

Human sweat will rust out anything in time.

I've pocket carried a ruger lcp, every day, since november of 2010.

That's a blued finish. More rust prone then the M&P's. Zero rust.

Leather absorbs moisture and wrecks gun finishes if you leave them sit in them. Just an fyi.

the kydex side was the bad side. and I've been carrying the pistol this way for 5 years brother.

Slide

And to beat it all the durn slides are marked Stainless I think it has a lot more carbon than stainless in it , a friends showed light rust ( 9 mm full size ) while still in the box , I pfer break free myself , really keeps the rust away and reasonable esp in larger sizes or surplus gallons when I purchased it years ago

I never heard of FireClean so I looked it up, read some reviews on Amazon, looked it up again to see what its made of... its biodegradable???? No, I would NOt use this anywhere near my firearms..

something got on the gun very corrosive you were unaware of is my guess.I had that happen to a smith model 29 1 time.Although it was only 1 spot.I would soak it with CLP and try to clean it off with the finest bronze wool you can get

Just give Smith a phone call and see what they say, they have a lifetime warranty. You may get lucky & get a new slide, Its just a phone call.... worse case scenario is you can always strip it and get it blued. But I'm sure S&W will take care of you...
