Folks, please forgive me, for I may be about to commit a sin on the forum.

As much as I love my Smith & Wessons, I also enjoy dabbling with Colt revolvers. I have a Colt Trooper MkIII that I bought NIB back in the mid to late '90s. I am contemplating making a move on a Detective Special or a similar D frame.

My question is fueled by my neglect of never handling a Colt D frame when I had access to a number of them!

My question is, where does the serial number appear on a D frame? Is it etched only on the frame opposite the crane, or is it someplace else, also?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Also stamped inside, in some era's. I'm recalling inside the side plate, but my memory is vague on the location. I once had to check the numbers on a suspicious looking frame stamping.
