Actually my question is more about the lack of rollstamps; I picked up my 627-0 a couple of years ago, with box and with rubber grips. All the 627-0s I see on this forum and beyond have rollstamps on both sides of the barrel. However, as you can see below, mine has its markings laser engraved (it also doesn't say "Model 627 of 1989").

Any thoughts on that? The matching numbered box does have Product Code 101024.

Any thoughts? Anybody seen another one like this?

To answer your question; No-I've never seen one like this-I'd dump it and try to find a real one. I'll give you $400 for it PLUS shipping..

That is the product code for the first 5,200 guns. Is the topstrap and sight strap checkered? My thoughts would be either a barrel replacment somewhere in it's life or a later build from leftover parts, S&W doesn't throw anything away. A call to S&W might tell you if it was ever in for repair service.

:D

Funny story about how I came into this gun - it was a private seller here in California (the model isn't on the "Safe Handgun List" and so I'm limited to ones for sale in-state) -- found him on Gunbroker.

The "buy it now" price was ~$650 -- I wrote the seller and offered $700 to end the auction early -- and ... he ignored my offer. Somehow the gun went unsold, and when he relisted I "bought it now" for $650. When we met at a local FFL for the transaction he said "yeah, I thought your first email was just a typo...."

Interesting gun. I'm curious about the Spec Ord code on the label (Julian style date) and the serial number prefix. Mine is # BEK 5831 and has the typical roll-die markings. I wish they would've left off "Model of 1989" on my barrel.

So the Spec Ord code is 2091 (April 1, 1992).

Serial number is BKF4*** - SCSW says ship date of Feb 1992 or so.

I have the same exact thing. A 627-0 with no rollmark of "model of 1989" on it. Mine has Hogue monogrips. Same thing. It's a 627-0, but no model of 1989 on it. My Serial # is BEK65??
