Question on 45 acp brass

Thanks to all who replied. That is why I love this forum, you always get your answer. Have a great new year fellows and my God Bless.

I personally think the person that came up with the
small primer 45 acp should be strung up to the nearest
tree. After all these years. Leave things that work alone.
Giant PIA!

When I pick up any 45 ACP range brass the first thing I do when I get it home is dump it in the tumbler to get it clean. Next I look at every case, check the headstamp and toss it in a bucket. When I run into a small primed 45 ACP w/small primer I toss it into a different bucket. If I run across a headstamp that I don't like (Amerc and unknown foreign) I toss it in the scrap bucket, and if I run across the occasional/rare steel case it gets tossed in the trash. When I get all the good cases sorted I'll return them to the tumbler for a better finish (normally I don't "polish" my brass except 45 ACP and 30-06 cases are easier to find in the dirt, rocks and trash where I shoot if they are bright and shiny).

Thanks for the tip on the Winchester lead free primer brass having small primers. So far all the Winchester USA brass I have takes large pistol primers.

CCI/Speer started using small pistol primers in their .45 ACP Blazer Brass ammo. The small pistol primers are also used in the .45 ACP Speer Lawman ammo. So far all the Speer Gold Dot brass that I have seen has large pistol primers.

Federal and Speer have been under the same ownership for quite a few years. I was disturbed to see that some Federal American Eagle .45 ACP brass now has small pistol primers. Some American Eagle .45 ACP brass still has large primer pockets. Apparently the CCI factory in Idaho puts some .45 ACP 230 gr. FMJ ammo with Federal head stamps in American Eagle boxes. Federal still loads their own American Eagle .45 ACP in Minnesota with large primers. The product number is the same (AE45A). Only the lot number would tell you if it is large or small primer brass. However, the CCI factory uses slightly smaller 50 round plastic trays and boxes than the Federal factory. You can see the difference in box size if both products are on the shelf together.

I use a primer pocket cleaner to remove the crimp from military brass. Any reason I couldn't use that to make the small pocket a large pocket?
