Question? Should Gun Stores Require NRA Memberships For Purchases?

arjay,

80 million gun owners = 80 million NRA Members, now that would help

with some issues in NEW YORK, CALIFORNIA, COLORADO and ILLINOIS for starters.

ACTIVISM and a LARGE MEMBERSHIP are now becoming a necessity.

The time for FREE RIDERS has passed.

Are you in a Union?

, even those of us who are too dumb or too cheap to join the only pro gun organization/lobby group that has any clout in Washington should be allowed to purchase our guns at the same price as those who recognize the threat to our freedoms.

One can recognize and act upon threats to our freedoms without having to join the NRA. So now, anyone who owns or wants to own a gun, but does not join the NRA is either dumb or cheap?

As a NRA member for many years I say no! No way! Thats anything but the american way. More restrictions? Heck no.

If I am required anything more than my hard earned money to buy firearms, I equate that to infringement and isn't that what we're fighting against?

Many clubs require NRA membership,as does mine. Even thought it supports the NRA, it's primarily to take advantage of the NRA insurance for clubs.

No to the OP.

Pilgrim's post:)

I have been a member of the Mystic Valley Gun Club in Malden MA for 20+ years.

No NRA membership, no club membership.

May be a standard in the state of MA, not sure though.

Due to my age there are probley few people here that have been a NRA member longer than me. Were the NRA to try to push that unGodly rule through I would instantly quit and work at becoming one of their worst foes. Thats what I think of that stinking idea. Fortunately that will never happen.

Well...

Diamondback68,

"Without a FOID CARD in ILLINOIS, you can't look at or handle a firearm.

Illinois doesn't have anything that's really FREE.

That's why it's Illinois!!

That smacks of unsavory business practice and a totally un American thing to do. I think it's a poor idea. It might add some to the rolls of the NRA which is a good thing but it might just backfire too. A lot of people would resent being pushed around and I'm pretty sure I'm one of them.

Could also alienate some customers from their LGS

There's better ways to get folks to support the NRA.

You basically want to unionize gun ownership. I have a right to support who I support. I already had to drop 250 dollars to get my ccw, now you want to add a NRA membership to me owning a firearm? No thanks.

No. By requiring buyers to buy a NRA membership, the NRA suddenly becomes a for profit organization and all the regulations in becoming a for profit company. Then would you want your 2A freedom dictated by a single private corporation? Nope.

I would support the idea of the NRA having an incentive program for LGS to sign as many new memberships as possible but purchase would have to be voluntary. Or having a NRA membership application printed on the back of the receipt - I'm personally don't throw receipts from major purchases away.

I will never join any organization by force. Who I choose to give my money to is my business and no one elses. While I admire your convictions, where is the respect for mine in your proposal? Your proposal only changes who thinks they have control over my rights, it doesn't necessarily protect them. I will choose who to support with whatever means I deem appropriate, I need no help choosing, thank you very much.

Ladder13,

I was in the Union for 43 years, good Trade job (machinist), good benefits, retired early, went back to shooting,

learned to reload and now learning to cast.

My club DOES NOT REQUIRE NRA MEMBERSHIP!

Life is good, ammo shortage, NAW! I learned before, and I keep ahead of the game, even with 22LR.

Last week I gave a 550 pack to a fellow instructor and league shooter running short. I told him when things recover to just replace it.

I keep alerting my Representatives that I'm paying attention to their actions, WEEKLY.

KEEP VILIGENT EVERYONE, and join the NRA if you're not already a member, show your COLORS.

2 of the ranges I considered when I first started shooting made it mandatory to join the NRA.I tend not to entertain any situation where joining a organization or club is a prerequisite condition to join another.I now shoot at a range whose only concerned is my safety, continued patronage and enjoyment and not my politics.

As long as we're on the subject of being "forced" to do something we don't want, I find that being forced to join a union as a condition of getting and keeping a job is the height of hubris. There is a reason why right to work states have the lowest unemployment rates.

Moonman,
I know your frustration, 80 million gun owners and 5 miilion NRA members. The NRA would have a lot more clout if there were more of us but I agree that one should not be forced to join in order to purchase a gun. I don't have any problem with discounts for NRA members and promotions by the LGS to sign up new members though.
I've had friends who are not members ask me "what does the NRA do for me" or say they don't "agree" with the NRA views. When I ask which views they either can't give me an answer or misstate the NRA's position on an issue. Unfortunately when they do come around to realization that the NRA is the biggest dog in the fight it might be too late. I live in NY and am seeing it first hand.
Someone earlier in the post says the join on a annual basis because the NRA may flip flop on an important issue. That sounds reasonable and it actually generates more cash for the NRA due to giving discounts for longer memberships but please don't tell me that the $25 deal to join the NRA is too much to ask for the work the NRA does.
My opinion,
Len

A dealer at gun shows offers a 10% discount if you have an NRA card. He also has applications on his table. I think something like that would help promote NRA membership without requiring it at gun shops.
Sure they could mark their stuff up ten percent but it'd still be an incentive to join the NRA.
