Cooling the pup

My neighbour's dog, Stella, does not like the heat. She had a couple of old cast-iron bathtubs lying around in the lower field, so I hauled one up with my excavator and we set it in her garden under some trees, found a plug and put water in. She's one happy pup now. (Not necessarily clean, but happy.)

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

This photo of an odd looking aircraft caught my eye, and the back story was quite a surprise.

When our navy ship, the USS Stark was almost sunk in 1987 by anti-ship missiles fired by an Iraqi plane, I remember reports at that time stating it was a Mirage fighter that staged the attack.

It turns out that a business jet had a Mirage fighter nose and fire-control hardware grafted to it, along with two hard-points to carry the missiles.

Had a really good morning in the back yard with butterflies. Many years ago Mom planted a button bush tree in the water garden, aka The Bog. It attracts butterflies and bees of all species during the year except when it is dormant in the winter. There was a half dozen species of butterflies and a few different kinds of bees on it mid morning today. The pic attached is of a male spicebush swallowtail trying to interest a female who just wants to eat. I was focusing on the female when the male flew into the picture.

This one was the size of a small bird. We've seen quite a few butterflies this year.

Just said a prayer for our servicemen and women after I saw a C-17 from the 62nd Airlift Wing out of Joint Base Lewis–McChord on the news just now in Afghanistan, inundated by desperate civilians while taxiing, and dropping the hangers-on after take-off.

Reminded me that I'd spoken with some Airmen of the 62nd, eleven years ago during an airshow at Offutt AFB while touring their C-17. They were a wonderful group.

Had not tried the new lens on the moon yet and we had a pretty good dusk moon tonight. Canon D80 using my new Canon 100-400 IS II USM and a EF 1.4x II extender. Forgot to take it out of Program mode and drop the ISO down so it has more noise than it should. Will try again soon with proper settings.

#1 Have you ever had a flat tire, 100 miles from the nearest repair shop. I have.

#2 Too high and I had to wait a weekend for the permits to move it out west from PA.

#3 Back when I was trucking I got home for a weekend in the winter time and woke up Sunday morning to this.

New passionflower hybrid

My gf is seriously into passionflowers and creates her own hybrids. This one just flowered today. "Father" was a flower she found in a local market, with a very strong perfume. No one seems to know what it is. The "female" was from a fellow in Italy.
