I was fortunate enough to recover some photographs from my very earliest existence, and thought I'd share them with you.
First, this is a picture of Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, where I was born. It was taken in 1939, my birth year. It was torn down years ago and rebuilt to more modern and expansive standards.
On the walls in that hospital today, I found this picture of the delivery room, also taken in 1939. More than probably, this is where I came into the world.
My folks then lived in Globe, Arizona, way East of Phoenix. My mother stayed with my grandparents in Phoenix prior to when I was born, so that I could be delivered properly. I was a breech birth, and the only hospital that had a proven expert on such deliveries was in Phoenix.
Recently, I discovered the address in Globe where my parents lived, and went to see if the house was still standing. Lo and behold, it was. A check on real estate records show that it was built in 1916, over a century ago.
This is a picture I took of the old building that used to house the Valley National Bank branch in Globe. In 1939, my dad worked as a teller there. It's long since changed ownership, and is occupied by a commercial business now. However, you can still see the original bank markings above the door. The building was constructed in 1909. The Valley National Bank was once the largest banking chain in the Southwest, but has since been gobbled up by Chase. Dad retired in 1966, and had worked his way up from teller to deputy comptroller for the whole enterprise, headquartered in Phoenix.
This is a photo my dad took of mom and me shortly after I was born in Phoenix. We are on the grass in front of my grandparents' home there. It still stands, built in 1920 - my grandparents moved from Kentucky and took up residence there in 1924.
It's fun to try to resurrect the past - I thought I'd share this journey with you.
