Pender and Carrall Streets, the entrance to Chinatown. I remember that area well. Largest Chinese ommunity next to San Francisco, I think. Used to go down there regularly when I lived in Vancouver. Has gone through a rough spell in the last few years but is recoveriing. In my early 20's (50 years ago) I worked for a while in the hardware dept. of Woodward's Department Store (now gone, near the Sun Tower, which you can see in the pic, poking up next to the street light) just to the west of Chinatown and I remember teenage kids coming in to translate for their parents, who spoke no English.

Nearby is the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden, which is wonderful.

There used to be a bakery, Wo Fat, in a little storefront which gave no indication of the business inside, who made the most delicious almond cookies. He'd get them from a big box in a glass cabinet, stacked between layers of the Vancouver Chinese Times newspaper. There was a well-known high-end cookware store, Ming Wo, whose main office was in Chinatown. I remember going there in the mid 90's and mentioning this to the clerk there. She remembered his shop and the famous cookies and said, "Unfortunately his recipe died with him", although there was another nondescript bakery that did pretty good ones.

Thanks. Brings back a lot of memories.

in the background is the Chevron fuel barge. There used to be 3 or 4 back when we had a boat at the RVYC (Royal Vancouver Yacht Club), which is west of this pic, nestled against Stanley Park. On the shore, behind the Chevron barge, is the Nine O'clock Gun, an early 19th c. black powder cannon that is fired every night at 9pm. It's all enclosed now, but back then much less so and some idiots were able to toss some rocks into the barrel. I remember this well!

In the past, there was a Texaco floating gas station permanently anchored in line with the gun. On Monday May 18, 1964, someone was able to toss rocks from the beach below into the barrel which then perforated the 'O' in the large illuminated sign above the barge. The barge was moved slightly after that event.
Thanks again for the memories. Glad you're enjoying Beautiful BC :)
