I have never seen anyone post pics of these before- 45 ammo, already in moon clips, for the 1917.

Two Boxes of 24 rds each. These are what I have seen over a period of many years. I call it the Zig-Zag box:

Two pics of a box I recently found. I have NEVER seen this short box before! I call it the Spoons box because of the arrangement:

Very educational.....I did not know configurations of these types existed. Thanks for posting...Frank McClain

Bulls-Eye powder was the powder used to develop the .45acp round. It was commonly used for .45 ammo.

Very nice finds. Are there any date stamps or codes on the boxes?

I do not want this to sound too hard but how else do you think they issued ammo for the M1917 revolvers? Just think about it for a minute. First, it is a lot easier to load the rounds in the clips at the ammo factory then in a mud filled trench in the middle of the night. The half moon clips were consider expendable not like the magazines for the M1911. You would not see anyone crawling around no-man's land look for their half moon clips. If you think about it delievering the ammo in clips to the front is the most logical way to do it. Now the military has been know to dispense with logic on a number of occassions but here is a time when they actually got it right.

That makes sense. Didn't they also issue big packages of the half moon clips without the ammunition? Seems there were some pictures posted here a while back.

"air droppable AND recoverable??"

A Sheridan maybe??

RAYB,

Everyone is Air Dropable BUT not everyone is Ground Recoverable (meaning you can walk away for the drop)!

Most likely the big package of the half moon clips was how they were shipped to the factory to be loaded there. The ammo factory most likely did not produce the clips, just the ammo. So, the clip had to be shipped the the ammo factory some way. Thus the big package>
