Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet

I already have one run with them all in (posted earlier in the thread) but it was a second attempt that day, and the group wasn't tight enough to beat Rastoff.

Slipped out of the office at lunch today to play a little :) I shot 4 rounds of the challenge with 4 different guns. While my FN Five Seven is my main carry, I have 6 or 7 other guns I carry from time to time depending on what I am wearing etc. I brought a few of those with me today to the range.

Each gun was shot cold with no warm-up. Each challenge was shot only once with each gun. They are posted below in the order they were shot. Though I didn't win any prizes today, I am more than happy with how I did today.

S&W SHIELD 9mm
I have owned this gun for a few years, but I don't shoot it that much. But I did some work to it and have been playing with it a bit lately. I installed and APEX aluminum trigger and their 3.5lb competition trigger kit. Huge difference from stock. I also just installed a set of Warren tactical sights (Red Fiber Optic front sight and all Black rear). As you can see I need to adjust them a little. Pretty pleased with this considering I just installed the sights and trigger. The shots in first two stages were pretty much all in the same spot and made one big hole.

FN FIVE SEVEN
This is my main daily carry gun. This is the handgun I shoot the most. I have been working on rapid fire drills with my 5 7 lately, and that is how I shot this target today. I emptied the mag in a few seconds for each stage. Next time I will shoot it slow fire, so I can have a better chance of getting them all in.

S&W 65 LadySmith
This is a honey of a gun. Perfect size. Perfect balance. Perfect barrel length. Glock Perfection? No this is Perfection. Tough to beat for a double-action fixed sight revolver that has NOT had any trigger work done. I would not change a thing about this gun. Maybe the perfect combat revolver, if not one of the most perfect guns ever made.

S&W 627 Performance Center 2.6" 8-Shot 357
I have had this gun for a few months, today was my third or fourth shooting it. I am pretty new to N Frames. The two 4" 45ACP N Frames I have I shoot really well. I am struggling with this N Frame Snubby. I need more practice. Pretty nice trigger from the factory and fits the hand like a glove.

FINALLY!

With a double action revolver no less...My tuned 586 L-Comp. I really though I would do it with my FN Five Seven first, but I was wrong.

Anyone else do it with a DA revolver yet?

No warm up. Shot one round cold. Yep 20 rounds passed through that paper. American Eagle 38spec 130gr FMJ.

The high shot on the left was my last shot!

Yes, currently Snowman has the best group and his was shot with a DA revolver. However, the difference is one of his shots was touching the line and none of yours are. Very nice shooting!

I just went through all 8 pages. I'll have to do it again, but I think I found 3 potentially qualifying targets. Alas, while the groups were small enough, they all had shots touching the line until now.

I'm headed to the post office right now.:D

I saw HarrisMasher's mention of this thread this morning and thought of it when I went outside to shoot.

I planned on shooting my 631 today because I just had the front site insert changed from red to black. I spend a lot of time working in the woods and this, or my 432, are the firearms I'm most likely to have with me.

Many folks probably don't consider the 32 magnum suitable for self defense, but it is what I have with me when I'm outside the house.

I did not remember the specifications of the challenge exactly, but these are the results of my only attempt. No practice rounds first. I used a 3" dot as my aiming point.

I fired all rounds double action. Six shots at 5 yards, 12 shots at 10 yards, 18 shots at 15 yards, finally 6 shots at 25 yards. I remembered 25 yards was not part of the challenge, but decided to press my luck.

The results are shown below. Five of the six shots attempted at 25 yards did not come close; they are covered with masking tape; you can see I jerked one shot high and to the left. I fired at a pace of about 2 shots per second for all shots except those at 25 yards, which was about 1 second each.

The results. It was a little windy, so I had to use the 631 and sprinkler for ballast. I used the caliper to outline a 2" X 3" area.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm liking the 631 more each time I shoot it. I wish I could have found one years ago, when they were reasonably priced.

Nice shooting samwood. You made it more difficult and that deserves recognition. Next time make it easier on yourself and shoot:
4 from 3 yards
6 from 5 yards
6 from 7 yards
4 from 10 yards

Based on what you shot from further distances, I'm sure you can complete this challenge.

Thanks for joining.

I went to the range Saturday and took Rastoff's Challenge again with my SIG P250 .380. My target is attached below. I got soo close, 19/20 in the orange. My one flyer was my first shot at 5 yards. I just stared at my gun for a minute, not believing I could miss so badly from that distance. (It was clearly the fault of the gun.) I knew I had blown it at that point, but not wanting to waste a perfectly good target, I went ahead and completed the challenge.

Oh, well. Just like the old Brooklyn Dodgers and the current Dallas Cowboys, I'll say, "Wait 'til next year!"

First let me say, nice shooting swsig!

Now, allow me to critique the target a little:

You said, "I got soo close, 19/20 in the orange." If this were an NRA match, you'd be correct. Any shot that touches the line gets the next higher score. Alas, this is not an NRA challenge. The challenge here is to get them all in the orange without touching the line. So, technically, you have 5 shots that miss the challenge.

Is that harsh? Yeah, maybe so, but it is what it is. Everyone I've talked to about this challenge says that it's harder than it looks; it is. It is a test of our ability to control not just the gun, but every aspect of precision shooting. It is intended to take us out of our comfort zone and force us to concentrate harder than we usually do.

In no way is this being critical of your shooting. You are a good shot.

So Rastoff, how many folks have successfully completed this challenge (all in the orange) thus far?

Using the "regulation" target there are only two, you and I.

Like I said earlier, snowman has the best group. His group is about .1" smaller than mine, but had one round touching the line. Here's his target:(shot with a DA revolver)
snowman%20measured_zps0t3wj7jp.jpg

BobO put up a really nice group, but overall it was a little high:
Bob-O%20measured_zpszh1guopa.jpg

That top round would be just on the line.

Then there was this target from another forum:
Rwehavnfunyetmeasured_zpswnq6mgrp.jpg

This is a good group. It might even have fallen within the line if he had used the target I posted. However, this shooter was all butt hurt that my measurement didn't match his. He claimed that I used the wrong bullet size because I used .452 instead of .451 for the bullet diameter. Obviously he doesn't understand how measurement works. Still, it was an impressive group even though the top round probably cut the line.

This is an amazing group from a guy with the name of Wimpy:
Wimpy%20Measured_zpsm7scij5j.jpg

It's always that one shot. ;)

Here's another heart-breaker from jdesro1911:
jdesro1911measured_zpsbcsn7ok9.jpg
jdesro1911%20so%20close_zpsqimxox18.jpg

Notice how small the group is if it weren't for that last shot.

Then there was me doing it again with my brand new Ruger GP100 Match Champion:
Match%20Champ%20Measured_zpsalk0yo3r.jpg

Obviously I need more work with that gun. It's a labor of love though. :D

Of course this wouldn't be complete if we left out Polymathpioneer's amazing target:
Larry%20Woods%20100%20yards%208%20shotsmeasured_zpscolmjfw9.jpg

This was 8 shots from a 625 revolver, double action, at 100 yards, under 3 seconds, in the rain and with mud on his glasses.

All these targets that were close, but just a little off (except Polymathpioneer's which is just a joke).

Your group from post #369 is the most obviously inside the orange and not touching any line. If you had used the more oval target, the high left hole might be touching, but I'm not splitting that hair.
HarrishMasher%20measured_zpszhh5drwp.jpg

Just for reference, here's the original that sparked it all:
Measured%20Group_zpskbsry0fo.jpg

I just got 10 of these in the mail:
20151006_141114_zpsmnaqeznn.jpg

These are 3.5" vinyl patches with the hook side of velcro on the back so it can go on a range bag. I'll give these out in my class. I might be talked into shipping one out to someone who really wants one and has met the challenge.

Obviously not many will be going out. ;)

I'm overwhelmed by the response and attitude of most. There have been some that claimed this challenge wasn't worth their time because it's not timed or done with movement. All who said stuff like that have not even tried it.

Keep going fellas. There is value in working on your marksmanship. It can only make you better in a defensive situation.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. It will make me work even harder the next time I take a flyer, er, shot at the challenge.

My most recent attempt at the "Challenge". Shot with my Browning High Power. Got to get a handle on those 10 yard shots! :(
