I sold my 6" Model 28 and my Llama 45 ACP on here last week. I went to UPS today to ship them. I knew UPS requires handguns be shipped overnight, so I was expecting that. But here's what I wasn't expecting: If the physical address on the FFL you're shipping to shows up in their system as a residence and not a business you can expect to pay about 20%-30% more for shipping.

Nothing I could say would convince them that I was shipping to businesses. If the address shows up in their system as a residential address, their residential rates apply. Period.

So, if you're not an FFL and you're shipping a gun you sold, you may want to find out ahead of time if the FFL you're shipping to is actually a business address. Needless to say I got hosed on these deals because of shipping costs. :(

I believe it's been that way as long as I can recall, many years. A business in a residence is still considered a residential address for their delivery purposes.

Their computers at the UPS walk-in counters that both the customers and the clerks use are using the USPO address and ZIP directorys. They automaticly show an address to be residencial or business locations.

The fact that a person has a business located inside a residencial address will not change the status of that address to a commercial or business location for delivery purposes on their computer.

Again, as always,,alot depends on who's behind the counter and how well they know or recognize you and your dealings with them(UPS). I bring in alot of business to one location and often certain clerks will let it slide as a business delivery to a residence. But others play it by the book.
It's a strange world at the big brown box.

I don't know about FedEx. The FedEx terminal here is all the way out at the airport which is too far. UPS is much more convenient.

FEDEX is ~$40. and much easier to deal when compared to UPS.

I would think FedEx's rates would be based on size and weight and delivery zone just like UPS's. They may wind up being cheaper than UPS but I don't think you can just say that any gun you ship FedEx no matter where is approx $40.

I have shipped handguns from UPS (store) locally to a business address,FFL, and the price was around $10.00 to $15.00. You cannot ship a firearm to a private address. As long as the FFL's address is correct and on the license as doing business there, then they cannot refuse to ship the gun there and absolutely charge you increase in price because they do not have the address in their dirrectory. However, you do have to show them a copy of the FFL of the receiving address just to clearify the licensee is legit and the gun is being shipped there.

That is incorrect. You can ship to anyone eligible to receive a firearm. It is a violation of UPS policy for a UPS store to ship a firearm, but not a violation of law. Maybe the clerk just didn't know any better. It sounds like he didn't know they had to go next day air either. You really lucked out!

Regarding the surcharge for shipping to a residence, UPS began that some time ago when they stopped requiring a signature for said delivery at the residence. They don't leave the package with a neighbor either, it goes on the back porch. You can decide where the surcharge goes.

UPS

Gary...please explain to me what is the difference if I go to a UPS store or the UPS terminal...this makes no sense to me...if they are a UPS affiliate why are they not able to accept handguns for shipment? No Compreny!

If shipping to a residence, they both charge the residential surcharge.

Fed Law does not require overnight shipping.
FedEx and UPS require that.
If you ship a handgun any way besides overnight by sneaking it by them, they WON'T pay the claim if it gets lost or stolen.

Lee that gun I shipped today is going ground, and I opened the box and showed it to them. He wanted to be sure there was no ammo. He asked how I wanted ship it and I said "the cheapest way."
