I hope to snag a 5906 sometime soon, but noticed that some of them come with a rear sight guard (proper term?). I am not particularly fond of it aesthetically.

1) Does it really serve any use for a range gun?
2) Does it come off?

Any help/comments/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

You're asking about the adjustible sights with "elephant ears". Sounds like you want the standard low-profile Novak sights. And no, they are not interchangeable.

Ugly but strong

If your going to use it mainly as a "range gun" as you state, then yes, the adjustable sights can be quite useful. They are kinda ugly, but they are very funtional as the ears provide good protection for the rear sight.
