My wife should have her CCW in a couple weeks and she feels comfortable with my 9VE. 1200 rounds, proven reliable and a safe trigger for carry. I'm thinking about a 40VE to replace it. After a few hundred break in rounds it'll be my daily carry weapon. How's the recoil compare and any problem getting back on target?

I have never shot a 40VE but I have shoot a .40 cal after my 9mm and have notice a different between the two. But I wouldn't mess with success so I would go with the 9mm

If it's working for her leave it alone. the .40 VE has a little more snap to it wich would be no big deal for you maybe, but she may not like it. I have the .40 VE and my wife doesn't like it much. I have a 9mm M&P service size that she likes a lot. I like them both. Good luck.

The .40 round tends to have a "snappier" perceived recoil. If you're happy with 9, a good 9mm defensive round will pretty much work as well as a .40.

My wife has a 9mm and does fine with it but if she shoots my 40 S&W the snappy recoil soon has her flinching and shooting low and left. Then it takes her awhile to get out of that mode when she goes back to shooting her 9mm. I would say stay with the 9mm....

I have one of each, and the recoil difference is observable, but not significant - - -TO ME. YMMV, however.

The difference I see is that in 9mm, I'm shooting light (115 FMJ) and in 40, usually the 165's.

But all things being equal (which they NEVER will be) there is not much percieved recoil difference.

I'm a retired old fart and to me there is a considerable difference between 9 and 40. I can shoot 200 rounds of 9mm and not notice it while 50 rounds of 40 is all I want to shoot at a session unless I shoot my reduced power reloads. Since I shoot both the M&P9 and M&P40 it's a valid comparison.

I have both and while the difference in recoil is present, it is not significant and 40 S&W ammo seems to be more plentiful especially at Wally's ....

Perceived recoil is so subjective...
I've run the 9mm and .40 Sigmas against the timer on the same IDPA stage, and found the .40 to be significantly slower for me.

I was somewhat surprised, as I didn't expect that much difference.
Can you rent one and try before you buy?
